Paternoster rig - cutting the loops to tie on hooks
Submitted by pelagicyachts on Wed, 2016-09-07 19:19
Question on paternoster rigs - instead of threading a hook onto the loops - can you cut the loops and tie the hook on? - in order to have a longer single line to the hook instead of two (formed by the look) I made one and cut the loops and tried to pull the knot apart and couldn't - suggesting it would hold but wanted to see if anyone did this ?
Cheers

yes
...I have also done that in the past without any slippage whatsoever . Only thing is you end up with a looser bit of line to the hook which can cause it to wrap around the main a bit more than the doubled piece. If that makes any sense .......but yes, it is good to go imo.

Have done it with a whiting rig and it worked ok. Not tried with anything bigger. Knot used was a dropper loop which I found on animatedknots.com

If you tie a small loop, say
If you tie a small loop, say about the size of a 50 cent coin you can then use small sections of leader with you hooks tied to it and a small loop in the other end and attach by using a catspaw? I think its called. Very hand if there are notwesters around! And works great for running snelled hooks on a patternoster

+1 again
This is the same method i use. Makes it easy changing hooks if one gets bitten off and saves tying another rig.

Also handy if you want to switch easily from singles to snelled hooks.

Maybe wasting a bit of line...
...but I'm guessing you could tie a huge dropper to begin with, cut it so it becomes a single, and tie hook(s) directly to that.
Or do the REALLY smart thing and simply use jigs.

does anyone use the main rig
does anyone use the main rig and tie lighter looped snells of the main loops
ive heard this works well for bolt cutters etc so you dont have to change the whole rig when loosing the loop

What you can do..
is tie two dropper loop knots 30 to 50 mm apart then cut half the outer one to tie to your hook, then you have a short double that stands proud of the mainline so it won't tangle so easily

Yep
I do a paternoster loop, then double overhand knot in the loop, cut at the second knot . Realy nice for whiting rigs and bigger stuff if you want.

Does anyone use a much
Does anyone use a much lighter leader down to the sinker so if the sinker jags you dont lose everything? Just wondering if that would work by using a catspaw between the sinker's leader and the dropper loop, and snelling the hook to the (shorter) main leader under the dropper loop?
Never tried it, not sure how the line would sit in the water.

My Standard
Always use 20lb to the sinker and have saved a huge amount of rigs from total loss.

Thinking more about it, i
Thinking more about it, i would tie the small dropper loop for catspaw to a leader of the same weight to a snelled hook, with a figure 8 loop above, to attach to the main line, and figure 8 loop below to catspaw a much lighter and longer leader to a sinker.

as others said
I use the paternoster rig ( with the twisty loops) but then tie a length of leader to my hook, with a loop on the end (simple figure 8 with follow thru) then join it to the loops with the catspaw.
makes life lot easier when things with teeth come thru, changing size/style of hook or packing up & cleaning at the end of the day.

Failures
I've lost a few fish using the cut twisted dropper method. Seems to work ok on light line but when tying paternosters in 40lb leader material if you pull it hard from the hook end and then tension the main part and pull the hook end again it will usually unravel. I've taken to tying twisted droppers with one of those tiny swivels you can buy from shorecatch as the 'loop' but keep the swivel as close to the centre line as possible. I can then tie droppers to the swivel without having a bulky 3 way swivel.

I find a surgeons knot with 6 to 8 turns works well for heavy mono as the knot is much more stiff once synched down also good idewith the swivel

Thanks guys - consensus seems to be mainly, ok for light line and a bit more thought given for heavy - cheers

definately
I make one of my dropper loops a bit bigger so i can thread a single hook for a lump of occy or fish baits.
The other loop is the longer one, cut it to a single strand of line then tie a snelled hook setup for using a hole small squid or pilchard on it.
My catch rates have gone up since i have doing that.

Lighter line to sinker
Going back a few posts, I use heavier line to the sinker - mostly same as the rig - +- 8- lbs, but tie a knot in the sinker part to create a weak link. This keeps the abrasion resistance good, but still lets the sinker break befiore the rest
