Thanks blokes....I got lucky
Thanks blokes....I got lucky today.....this big boy was in a cave with a bunch of females (lucky guy, till I came along), luckily I had a torch and managed to see him in the pitch black and wrestle him out. Struggled to fit him in my catch bag!
10m is not too bad, one day I was pulling them out of 16m, after 8 dives and 6 crays at that depth I was buggered
Now hoping to upgrade my current PB for a 3kg+ model......I love early cray season! :)
The old dingy performed well today, dive buddy sitting up front needed to see a chiro when we got home though haha

can you tell males and
can you tell males and females apart from looking at them? Or was he just huge compared to the others? We had a dive at rotto yesterday and they were either berried, tar spot or undersize!

Yes. Have a look for prong
Yes. Have a look for prong shapes under the flaps. if they have hair you can't take them. look up western rock lobster brochure on a fisheries website has all the photos!

I meant just looking at it
I meant just looking at it head on, as the way he wrote it kinda implied he picked the male from a bunch of females (without grabbing each one and looking under their flaps)

Legs
With the jumbos the males have much bigger legs so you can have a good guess that way. When they're smaller your guess is as good as mine, but sometimes you can see the under carriage if you can get your torch on the right angle, especially over sand when the light reflects up.

KMO is on the money.....For me, I ascertain cray size based on the legs. If you see big legs hangining in front, go for that one.
The one in this tread, I saw him side on first and saw his big fat tail first.

Harlequin would be good
Yeah they look great , I have a reasonable collection , my fav are "Mu" or Big Eye Sea Bream , they have teeth like human molars in the back half of the jaw ( hard fish to spear though , as allways seem to hang just outside of range! ) have a 15kg trout jaw aswell , but never have been able to keep Wahoo jaws together ( only fish which can moove its upper jaw as well as lower) , let me know if you have any success with Wahoo jaws , would be interested to know how..
