PB Tailor from Cockburn Sound

Well after reading Southcity's report from tailor from washy reefs last week, a mate and i decided to take the ski out on the New Years Day public holiday and try target these solid tailor on lures. We ended up with 3 tailor with the biggest going 48cms, we lost quite a couple, and there was a bloody big sambo easily 1m+, hanging around under the ski waiting for us to bring the tailor in, where he would try ambush the fish from below! Was quite a sight, and my mate ended up hooking him on a piece of fillet, using 8lb line and our flicky gear and as you can imagine the fight was short lived!

Decided to take my younger brother (pictured) out today and boy was the fishing hot!! 2nd cast over the reef and my pink richter plug gets smashed, this fish was an unstoppable, busting me off on the reef after about 10secs. I cast another richter popper in white and my lil bro a lil gold halco roosta for another hour and a half without even getting a hit. We then found the school again and picked up a mid 40's cm tailor on the richter. Had heaps of hits but the fish werent realy hitting it with gusto at this stage so none hooked up. We saw one tailor, estimated around 65-75cm's, hit the popper 3m from the ski, nowhere near the reef out in open water, this thing was huge, the biggest tailor i had ever seen in my life, bright silver side with a realy dark head and top, it took the plug down a meter then spat the hook! I think its mouth was too big for the lure! I was shaking for about a minute, i couldnt believe what i had just seen! I continued to lose about 5 fish, with hooks getting spat after only a few seconds of the fish hitting the lure.

We then found a school on another patch of reef and these fish were hungry!! Backflipping out of the water with the richter plug in their mouths was quite a spectacle. 3 solid fish in 4 casts, the biggest going 61cm to the end of the tail, a 53cm fish and two between 45cms and 50cms. I lost my second richter plug when another solid fish around 60cm swallowed the whole lure, and easily bit through the 18lb leader.

As you can see, the fish are a little too big for the biggest dish we had in the house. The richter plug is fast becoming one of my favourite lures, as the strikes are so visual and the action is awesome. The halco roosta didnt get one hit all day, so my lil bro got to model the fish for photos instead! This was probably one of the best sessions ive had fishing off the ski, it was definately worth getting soaking wet on the trip out! An awesome day with the flick rods and 8lb line!

** Excuse the wonky horizon in the pics! It was a bit rock and roll out there on the ski today!!**

Those islands provide some great wash for Tailor. Salmon also at the right time of year. Well done and great pics!

i also enjoy going round and round sometimes but fishing off the ski is such a buzz when you get onto some good size fish, you would experience the same kind of thing in the yak too!

Yep agree with Jamie! In the past I ran 2 snelled hooks back to back on a smallish leader chasing GT's from shore which had a much better hookup rate than a mate using same plug with trebles

ps. beau, top work mate you are pumping out some good fish & posts, keep it up always a good read

Agree with Till on singles. The hook up rate drops a little but once they're set you rarely lose a fish. Nice fish though, very nice.

nice fish there mate.

sharpen up your hooks, most of those lures your using have vmc galv hooks but they are usually bluntish out of the packet.  keep a small file in your tackle box and give them a sharpen the hooks will set themselves

nice haul

Some great tailor there Beau -congrats on your PB.

The ski would be great for getting around some of that shallow reef.  Plenty to explore up near the stragglers aswell.

Bet you can't wait for the Salmon now.

Cheers Pete

Mon, 2011-01-10 08:19

I think the choppiness has a lot to blame for the lost fish, as the lure was jumping around quite a bit the tailor couldnt take the lure into its mouth. I caught the three larger fish mid-morning when the wind dropped to around 5-10knts and as you can see from the photos, the fish had no problem taking the lure in its mouth.

Yep i enjoy my hardbodies aswell, Rapapla X-rap is probably my favourit lure, but sometimes the water is way too shallow for a diving lure, and you cant beat the visual strikes of a solid tailor hitting a surface lure

cliff53- find the whitewash, find the fish!

PeteD- the ski is perfect around the reef! The yamahas handle realy well in the slop too!
