PE 5 O/H jigging reel

Hi guys, i'm currently looking for an overhead jigging reel to run PE5, i was thinking along the lines of a jigging master power spell reel, either the PE5 or the PE5 narrow, has anyone used both and what was your thoughts?, any other suggestions?

Sorry mate, can't measure the 12 for you ... got only the 8 (II) and 16 (I). As Till said, the 8 is quite good for the 50lb, I've got 500yds of 30lb on mine (no backing though).

If you only want to fish 50lb

Wed, 2012-07-18 19:36

If you only want to fish 50lb then the TAC8 takes about 350m of DSBB PE4/55lb, no need to go to the bigger sizes. There is a single speed over in the FS section of the site too at present.

Hey, Mabee the odd sambo jig, would be backup to my stella5 when I need to send a bigger jig down because of conditions or my bottom basher. I have a trinidad20dc that I use at the moment but its a little wide for jigging. May have to stick with it and upgrade to the jigging master evo titanium in prob a 300 grammer.

PE 5

Thu, 2012-07-19 08:49

Yewie we have just recieved a Jigging Master order including Rods, Reels, Jigs and much more but no PE 5's! haha. The PE 5 and 5 narrow is a reel that we predominatley stock whilst we get the large sambo aggregations offshore down this neck of the woods. We can get them for you though. Another reel to perhaps consider would be the Avet MXJ 5.8. It has a spool width of 35mm and plenty of get up and go.

Cheers

Out of all those reels nothing will come close to the powerspell , accurate and talica's and my powerspells are indestructable and have the duel docking drag system and best of all they are fully blinged out straight out of the box ;) hahahahaha.... talica is also a very nice reel though .

Go the power spell you will not be dissapointed !

Thu, 2012-07-19 10:18

I've been looking at replacing my old, worn out Trinidad tn16 with the powerspell pe5 or something similar.

Is it true that the powerspell makes a clicking noise when the handle is turned? (apparently due to duel drag/anti reverse)

I'm in Carnarvon so I can't go down to a tackle shop to have a look before I buy.

JM gear ratio

Thu, 2012-07-19 21:19

Hey Yewie if you decide to go with the powerspell just have a good play with it in the shop and make sure you happy with the gear ratio/line retrieval , they only have one complaint against them and thats there painfully slow . But depending on what depth your fishing and if you like to winch fish up they are super grunty reels and have no other complaints against them ..

Mighty slow

Thu, 2012-07-19 21:34

By god the powerspell is a slow reel, but as you say they dont have anything else wrong with them

I have a PE4 and it more then makes up for its lack of speed with its low down grunt. The reel is a machine, you can do near on anything to it and it just keeps on keeping on.

Yeah gotta be careful not to upset the sponsors, but I did find the gearing a little low, and the ticking a little irritating.

Really the PS reels may have been ok, but personally I found both a really long arm, and a really low year too much. Sure you can winch anythbing up, but you can;t spin with the low gear and the big loops your hand does with the long handle.

Fri, 2012-07-20 08:01

The low speed of the Powerspell rules that out as a replacement for me. The Trinidad has a 6.2:1 ratio and I wouldn't want to go much lower than that and I like the shorter handle.

I like a reel that can do more than one thing, the PS seems like it's only suitable for jigging. I might go for a Talica or maybe a Stella 10 instead.

Powerspell

Fri, 2012-07-20 08:59

The Powerspell does have a slower gear ratio than that of the Trinidad and the like. At 4.0:1 its not aiming to be the quickest reel in the market, But does keep up with the most powerfull reels in the market place. When using reels with 6.2:1 gear ratio's for general bottom bouncing and jigging there is always that initial inertia when turning the handle. Some people dont mind this and preffer to be able to crank their lead/Jigs up quickly. For myself I feel as though you are making your arm work harder than you should. When using lower geared reels it eliminates the inertia and gives you more low down torque for cranking jigs and lead. Much the same as using 1st gear in your car to start driving. When using the Powerspell reels with a properly filled spool you will retrieve more than enough line per turn of the handle, More so with the PE5N as it has a taller spool there for retrieving more line per turn of the handle. The ticking noise is simply the Double dog anti reverse doing its thing, Some people dont like this and now Jigging Master are doing "Muted Versions". In the end you have a reel that is Super strong, Reliable, Smooth and able to be effectivley used even when it has been fully submerged in salt water. Ive been in the industry for just shy of 5 years and find the Powerspell to be one of the nicest allround overhead reels on the market.

Everone on this forum has the opportunity to offer constructive criticism on this forum Till so no one is upset

Ill PM you soon Yewie with all the info.

Cheers Blake

Any difference between the 'mute' and normal versions other than the sound?

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Hi Dan,

Sorry about the late reply, I was flat out in the shop yesterday.

There is no difference between the two reels, Only the sound. All drag pressures and general specs are the same.

Let it be noted though that these muted reels are generally not kept instock and would require to be orderd in as 99% of customers are happy with the standard version.

Cheers

I forgot to mention the Mute Docking system only runs the one AR Dog, This paired up with a strong AR bearing keeps it tough. Many Brands will only put one AR bearing in their reels or on some more up market reels 2 AR bearings are used without using any form of mechanical anti-reverse system . The Jigging Master Mute Docking system is still alot stronger than most systems on the market. Though if you wanted the strongest system on the market than the standard powerspell series would be the way to go. When actively fishing you barely even notice the noise.

Cheers

That is silent, cheaper and quicker, but not too quick.

It also has plenty of grunt.

I am sure there is a reason, I just don't know it.

Fri, 2012-07-20 11:32

There is no denying the Talica is an awesome reel, We sell them instore.

As mentioned for those that dont like the clicking noise the strong Double dog system makes, Than there is the option of a Muted series, Many dont mind the noise just like myself but the option is there.

The Powerspell boasts more drag pressure and after I personally used both reels out on the water, I preffer to use the Powerspell for a days fishing. I did like the Talica though. As mentioned we sell both items instore so this isnt a biased opinion. This is purely what I think after using both products on the water. Everyone is free to their own opinion.

Your always welcome to come instore to check them out if you havnt already.

Cheers

JM Powerspell reels!

Sat, 2012-07-21 12:14

I agree with Blake, each to their own but Ive never had a problem with lower ratio reels just when I've used some higher ratio versions. The low down torque/crank of the Jigging Master Powerspells reels are ideal for the fishing I do!

I have several Powerspell reels in my own collection and once filled with braid and used out on the ocean I dont have an issue with a AR dog clicker noise as its making it the strongest reel so all's good!

Many of our keen regulars and many FW members dont own one JM powespell they have up to 4 of them and as mentioned the drag pressure is silky smooth and bullshit powerfull reel. The reel keeps on punishing fish and we dont get the returns/waranty claims with these reels when compared to some other big name brands!

The JM Powerspell mute version have only a few colours available from what I was told a while ago and when speaking to JM Australia he said around Australia there wasnt many requests but yes we can certainly order in. As for the Talica its a great reel and one we always stock, drop Blake a PM if you have any enquiries!
