Peel Estuary - How does it work??

Very difficult day yesterday on the estuary (southern end) popping for Yellowfin Whiting, doughnuts for 6hrs fishing across the high tide period. Wind was 16knts or so gusting to 20+ at times, but we have caught fish in those conditions before, on this occasion though, not only didn't we raise a scale, we didn't even sight a whiting. Normally you will see them scuttling along under or behind a lure even if they aren't biting or overly interested, or if you are quiet enough, you will see them mooching around in the next sand patch across, or even at your feet. Yesterday, nothing. Obviously it's getting late in the season, and the water is cooling down, but we got 30+ fish on Friday afternoon (all released), when conditions weren't vastly different temp wise. What I'm getting to, is that yesterday, the High tide should have been around 11am (best guess using known tide times on the coast north and south of our spot and halving it), at a height of 0.9m, then a low just before 6pm of 0.5m. Normally on a 0.9m tide, the flats are full of water, and I have several landmarks on the shore which indicate a normal high tide mark at that height. yesterday, at what should have been the top of the tide, the high mark was nowhere near the markers on shore, and (obviously!) the depth at the area I fish was nowhere near what it usually is on a 0.9m tide. Why didn't the flats fill with water yesterday? Does the wind have some sort of an influence? I recall reading another post describing the concept of "surge" in the estuary. Was yesterday the opposite effect? Would love to hear peoples theories (if not actual factual knowledge!) as to what occurred. Whatever was the cause, no water came up and as a result, the whiting didn't come out over the flats. So in summary, can somebody please explain how the tides and "surge" effect work in the Peel Estuary? Cheers!

I don't have enough

I don't have enough experience down here to comment on the peel estuary mate, but as you are suggesting the wind does impact the tide a lot. In some places I have seen it put water a long way further than it normally would.
You're keen mate continuing to fish for that long with nothing, I haven't been out for whiting for a few weeks...maybe its too cold now ?!

If they're not on the flats...

...I try the channels. If they're unwilling to hit a surface lure in the deeper water, I'll swap over to sinking stick/bibbed minnow, or a little softie if the blowies are not too bad.

Haven't been for nearly two weeks, but still got 15 + a bag limit of hezzas...I honestly believe that if they're slowing down, it's more to do with the rain that we had last week...I reckon the whiting would be more sensitive to changes in salinity than most other fish.

It's also worth noting that tide times in the estuary are up to three hours later than those on the coast.

I take it you are fishing

I take it you are fishing around the Cut rather than Coodanup? We've got onto a couple of herring at Coodanup but never anything consistant.

I've almost converted to minnows now and would use them exclusively if it wasn't so much fun watching them smash poppers

I'd say the season is just about done, they react massively to the slightest change in air and water temps. Sub 15 degree air temp last night is a very cool change

Agree!!! Looking forward to squidding this year... Went for a crab in the estury this morning and got our 20 in 5 pulls... I was surprised to see so many crabs still around, won't be long until they disappear though... Don't know if it's any use to you but the water temp out there today was in the low 18s

The pros will hit the whiting from time to time and you won't see them for a month or so they will run a net around the whole sand bar and get a couple hundred kilo in one shot. It's fukd but they need to make a living to. Give it a couple weeks they'll be back
