Peppermint grove beach salmon
Submitted by lachieH on Wed, 2015-12-30 22:00
hi everyone, in May next year I am probably heading to peppermint grove beach for a few days. I was thinking that it would be about the right time of the year for salmon as well. I was just wondering, do the schools come close enough to the beach to cast lures around there and is it a good location for salmon fishing?
thanks,
lachie

One word
Yep, the schools come through there but not as big or thick as on the other side of Geographe Bay.
They are usually back run fish that have done their business and are on the way back south. On the up run they go past Cape Naturaliste and come in to deeper water then turn right to connect with the coast again , doing a circle and coming in around Dunsborough/ Meelup area then heading north again through Eagle and Bunker Bays across Geo Bay and hitting the west coast at or around Bunbury.
All this is dependent on the water temperature being cold because once they hit warmer water they will spawn and turn back south as has happened many times in recent years.
On another subject that runs along the same lines, if you are in to whale watching but don't like heading out in boats to do it then Point Piquet north of Meelup is one of the best land based spots where they come close to shore. Their run mirrors salmon run on both their run north and south.

Don't know if it still
Don't know if it still happens but back in 97 an old mate (busso local) took me down to Yallingup beach in the late arvo of Easter weekend, was packed/lined with people almost shoulder to shoulder, tails outa the sand (bleeding) all over the place, had to cast/retreive as straight as pos to avoid tangles/agro, not good for a rookie like me but was pretty chuffed/excited having reeled in the biggest fish I'd ever caught, not much of a fight or great eat'n though.

Bit of reef at Peppy Grove
Bit of reef at Peppy Grove and up to Stratham north of there so youd have to find your spots carefully i guess (I havnt fished there much). Forrest beach just south might be worth a look too as theres no shoreline reef i dont think. I know they sometimes catch the schools coming through from Dalyellup and then the beaches North of Bunbury

Lachie, there's a couple of spots for a good beach fish. The Pine tree has fished well in the past, that's half way between Peppy and Forrest. Also Robinsons Cut is just a little west of Peppy, you might need to ask a local about that. It's usually fished in a boat, but I've heard of plenty of fish coming from the beach here.

Wonnerup
Havn't been down Busso for years (lived there for a few in late 90's)
I know the canals changed the beach sth along Bayside (where I got married)
But does the inlet still open nth at Wonnerup?
Still allowed to take 4x4's up there?
Was a great spot, spent allot of time up there fish'n (banjos mainly), swim'n, running the dogs, getting away from tourists etc
