Picture of FWA's sounder off tv

 Hi,

I was watching the FWA episode that was on the weekend where Ryan went out deep for Grey Band and Blue Eye. I paused the tv and took this photo of the sounder and just have a few questions.

In the shot, is it a rock that is showing on the sounder, fish or coral that is showing in the centre of the picture?

And on the right hand side of the picture, not the A Scope, is that just fish by themselves or ground and fish combined?

The reason I ask is that I have been out a few times in the same depth and got a similar picture on my sounder but it only has a 500w transducer and the fish don't show as strong. One outing, I caught some grey band off of this type of sounding but the second time out, the current was so strong that my baits weren't staying on the bottom for long and I didn't catch a thing other than a few green eyed sharks. I didn't know if it is structure or just interference from something. I can turn my gain right up and make it solid instead of broken up but then I get clutter all over the screen. In the near future, I will upgrade to a 1kW transducer but for the time being, I would like to know what Ryan's sounder was showing.

Thanks,

Ken

The dark red is all the bottom, the little lumps are caused but the seas/swell, the ground got deeper then theres a 3-4m lump in the middle there, anything above it is fish(lighter red, prob good fish, green, smaller fish perhaps)

Hey Ken

When you get an answer, why dont you post it up under this thread. I'm sure that there is more than a few of us that would be interested in Ryans interpretation of the sounder. Mind you, it would seem pretty evident that he saw it as fish given that he caught off it !

cheers

I think this is one time that the a scope is advantageous.  it is a real time image of the echo strength.  what you see as a really really deep red / burgundy colour is the bottom.  anything above that is not the bottom ie either weed or fish.  looking at the strong red colour immediately above the bottom, still looking at the a scope, I'd say they're strong fish echos.

My sounder interpretation!

Hi Ken,

I received your PM and happy to answer mate as Randall said!

Ok, firstly its limestone hard base and in the middle of my sounder is several lumps!

The lead up to the lumps is ground flares!

After the lumps are all fish, that colouration is normally bass & puka but with the blue echo's mixed in is normally trevalla (yes all 3 can mix into a school)!

Feel free mate to ask any questions .... happy to help!
