Pingers
Submitted by Nelly on Sat, 2018-09-01 18:28
Had a good day on the water today,Unfortunely was pinged twice, early in the day a black barcrusher named Back in Black came out of nowhere and dropped in on my drift(under50m),sounded around and quickly left(after a few choice words)
Later in the day a older fibreglass boat did something similar.
Its a big ocean out there especially when your 30km+ out.
I understand i dont own the ocean and guys can have the sames marks.
There have been times i have got to a spot and found someone on it and have given it a wide berth and gone to the next spot as the its a big ocean.

Haha,
Barcrusher says it all, all the gear and no idea, bet he had a rocket launcher full of every size Stella and an empty icebox to match.
That loser has a rep for that kind of shit, should stick to taking it up to Jurien once a year with the other tryhards and blaming the wind/tide/swell/moon for not coming home with a single thing except the rays he caught on the sand cause he cant read a sounder.

If you have the same mark as someone else you know within a mile if they are sitting on it and just turn and head to your next mark. You dont drive up along side and then decide they are on it and move away. Guy is a pinger.

mate , I’ve got over 100 spots out of Mindarie and you were about 150 metres from one of them , that’s as close as I got to you I did one quick look at it and kept going , the same as I did about 15 times before I got near you. I don’t need or want your spots.

Thanks for the reply. You were much closer then 150m i could read your boats name without my glasses on.
You may have 100's of spots im sure most of us do,even more reason not to come in so close.Especially such a long way out.
Im not out to start trouble but I and many other boaters i know dont appreicate being dropped in on and it does raise questions.Even if your intentions were not there.
This is will be last reply to this thread,Thanks

I’ve helped out a few members here with spots that were struggling and I share a few with a couple of well known members just to make things clear mate. After 14 boats I have ample spots out of every ramp from Freo to Jurien.

So what is the etiquitte?Here
So what is the etiquitte?
Here are 2 situations from today
1) Travelled out 40km to a spot that I picked out on Thursday night from the maps that I have access to. When I arrived 5 boats (including 2 tinnies btw WTF) were within 300m of each other. I am only reasonably new to heading out this far and do not have many spots. Do I just turn around and go home?
2) On the way back in, headed to a spot my deckie used to fish with his old man. We get there and someone is anchored about 100m from his mark. We set drift so as not to interfere. Half way through our 1st drift another boat pulls up almost right next to the anchored boat and jumps on our same drift.
So in your eyes, what is an acceptable distance between you and a boat that is alrerady near your spot?
I normally take a wide berth however if someone pulls up near me, as a long as they are not going near my line or force me to change my drift fair play.

Yes. As a novice I would like to understand an etiquette better too. Usually I don't mind when someone is dropping on my "secret" spot where I am trying to catch that elusive wrasse for a second year. But those guys usually have their eyes so glued to fish finder while they circling around me, pretending I am not there, so I worry that they are going to go over my drogue or fishing line or something :-(

etiquitte on the water
I find that a hard question to answer, I think most of us have what we consider to be a good idea of what is "the right thing to do" if some one comes up onto the same bit of reef you are fishing. just as the person who comes up to that spot has the idea of what is acceptable in such situations.
I hope that makes sense.
All of us have spots that we catch good fish on and like to keep their location as close a secret as possible, the truth that we must all acknowledge is that it is most probable indeed highly likely that there are quite a few people with the same locations marked on their GPS.
If a boat comes along and comes within 50 metres of you to check out how you are going I have no trouble with that as I some times do the same to see how that particular spot is fishing. Also on occasions I have given the boat on a particular mark a call on the radio and asked them are they "doing ok" you don't ask for a blow by blow of what they have caught but are just being friendly IMO and yes I have had some very threaten remarks said to me in reply which I think are quite undeserved.
Unfortunately society is what it is and we just have to get on with it and move on with life.

Downwind drifters and pingers
I find my patience gets tested if another boat comes and parks downwind on my drift.
That is, they are obviously going to cover your intended drift and ground just minutes before you do.
I reckon that really shows a lack of consideration. And it's the only time I have had stern words with another boat.

Speaking of black barcrushers, had a big one pull right up to me a few times atleast 60km from any ramp off mandurah, saw him coming and made sure i sat on the sand.. he still ran a loop around me. wasn’t the boat in question

Probably the same one i saw launching at woodies once and he asked me " how and where to catch snappers" i thought that was a nice boat in the wrong hands. Good work sitting on the sand, i hope you were striking your rod and making a comotion about dropping a massive dhuie right in front of him haha he woulda marked it as his number one spot

Popular ramps have been used
Popular ramps have been used for many years by boaties with high end sounders, alot of guys have put in alot of hours just searching for ground, so i think that for someone to jump on a forum and blatantly call someone out as a pinger in the metro area is pretty harsh, that same mark will be in 100s if not thousands of sounders and was probably fished by a few boats after you left it. The best thing to do out on the water in my opinion is give a wave or thumbs up and if they are that close even have a chat.

True
I always think that when some one quite seriouly says , we travellled 40kms out to find someone right on OUR spot!
On the other hand everyone on here is mature enough I hope to all agree , that who evers f@#$n spot it is , where ever it is , like little jonny says ,
be the bigger man and simply just move away , do it ourselves , just go somewhere else.
If you cruised along the wonderful southern beachs like the warren or yeagarup looking for salmon on a nice day with hardly anyone on the beach , miles and miles
of gutters , would you stop 50 m from a another group and start fishing , I wouldnt , couldnt live with the shame.

I was coming from shore heading west and they were drifting to the north so I wasn’t even in their “drift” so I did not drop in on their drift line. That’s it from me on the topic I can’t be bothered anymore.

Couple of factors
Couple of factors here....
One can't be proven so guilty until proven innocent.
The second is, give a bloke some room even if you've previously fished the spot. If he's beaten you there drag your ass out of bed earlier next time and you won't have this carry on.

A little light
Was not going to weigh in on this but i thought i may be able to take out a bit of missconception around this matter.
How can i shed some light, well i was the deckie on Nelly's boat for the day and i thank him muchly for this.
Now i know both Nelly and Ryan and consider both ripper fellas so not interested in taking sides. More so in just clarifying the situation.
The spot we where fishing at time is on a patch of nothing noticable, infact unless you are on the ball with sounder reading it will most likely look like nothing at all to you when in fact it is a huge patch of black coral. Never see pots on it, so not a spot that is easy to come across.
Whilst drifting the spot a larger black CC was heading in a specific direction and all of a sudden took a turn in our direction wich is what caught our attention (so certainly not heading to this spot initially), the boat came into view and got well within 50m or closer before it came to an almost hault and the reason i can guage this is i am blind as a bat, had not worn my glasses for the day and could read clear as a bell "back in black", so I am disinclined to accept that the spot that was being Checked was a spot that was 150m away but as i know Ryan is a ripper fella and honest i will ceratinly not say that he is spinning yarns. As the boat drove off there where some lovely hand gestures comming from BOTH boats as this sent frustration into ovger drive.
I get that this spot may have been previously marked, however when stopped near Nelly's boat there was alot of sounder fondaling happening wich i think may have heightened speculation of a new spot gaining entry into the gps, it still puzzles me as to how someone who has a tonne of marks would even bother comming up on another vessle instead of just moving on to another spot and saving the bullshit.
I dont get into the whole pinging shit and as you can clearly read above im not stating here nor there and you can take what i have written however you may please but how about some common courtesy as in my many years of boating i have generally found the people who condone such actions are the biggest culprits of the lot. I personally ensure I take a super wide berth if someone else is already fishing the numbers i was heading to as i believe it is just the right thing to do and i firmly believe that if you are a real fisherman with morals then you would practice the same.
I also have owned a shit tonne of different boats and have more spots than i could dream of ever using hence why i never need to get close to other boats and frustrate the skippers no matter where they are.... Pretty simple i reccon.
Any who, happy monday to all and hope you all got to take advantage of the good weather over the weekend

hi mate , long time no see - i have a heap of spots heading West and Heading North out of Mindarie depending on weather conditions and after discussion with my decke Ben (who is one of my crane fleet controllers and sitting about 3 feet away from me as i type this- Lol!) we were spot checking all the way from about 28 metres to about 40m (where you were if i remeber correctly) we dont drift just hover on the motor in reverse and drop fishing very small lumps/coral etc , and these spots are not in a straight line they zig and zag over the many different paths we have travelled from our "go to" lumps so often we are veering left and right a few hundred metres while heading for a particular spot , i was heading to a spot in 44m a couple of miles outside of you when i decided to check a reasonably reliable one on the way and that's why we veered off course , i hadnt even noticed your boat at that stage so much that Ben said "are you going to drive through that boat in front of us" now without any malice or bad intentions i continued on did a slow tight circle of "my" spot which certainly wasn't in your drift line and after seeing nothing of interest throttled up and kept going , Ben said there was a bity of carry on (gesturing) coming from the other boat but i dont usually bother with that stuff so i didn't worry and kept searching - just to be clear i don't ping , have never pinged and i also dont really get bothered by anyone coming close out on the water as we fish a very particular way and most people fish differently so dont get on the small spots we fish.

Yep i get that and that is why i said i was not taking sides as to be honest i cant be bothered, it was more or less to try and clear up the 60odd comments from above from a POV that was not one of the skippers.
Boat is looking tops BTW and bloody quick through the water when she gets going. Good to see you had a good day out aswell mate and got your fish. Almost made me think about buying a new tub on the weekend after months and months of lost fishing passion...... Amost haha.

no amount of pinging would help most of the losers on here anyway. Need to know how to read a sounder first. Look for the guy with the biggest fastest boat with the most Stellas and you got a pinger for sure. All the gear and no idea. If you want opinions on Perth wankers just ask the locals in Seabird.

Doing it wrong
I must be doing it wrong. I once cruised over the say Hi to Ryan a few months back but forgot to make a mark on the sounder! ha ha.
This all seems a bit odd given that the original poster didn't seem to know who Ryan was yet the deckie has fished with him before? Would think Deckie would mention Ryan is a prolific poster of fishing reports on here and probably wouldn't need someone else's mark.
If you're upset someone is fishing your marks when you are out there, think of all the people fishing them when you aren't out there!

Not at all Zoom, i know ryan from other avenues than here, also never fished with ryan. When i am a deckie on someone elses boat i shut my mouth and dont cause drama. Had no idea this was going to get posted so there for never realised the real issue.
You will note that several times i said in my post that i am not taking sides, nor am i pointing fingers... Once again it comes down to me being a guest on someone elses pride and joy and i am there to be seen and not heard.
Thankyou how ever for the conspiricy theory i will be sure to archive it.

my mark near yours is a small lump about 10m sq not flat coral for drifting , it was actually given to me by a good mate Joff Weston who most of you have heard of i am sure (Joffa works for me as do 4 other ex Bluewater tackle Managers/staff ) its called Balddhu on my GPS for obvious reasons and 50 metres or 150 metres may as well be on the moon for how close you need to be on it but its a good one that has produced many times, i'll say it again i apologise for upsetting you but i was NOT pinging you.

Many years ago, a new bloke on board, green as grass.
