Please help a novice out

Hi everyone , I've just recently bought couple of rods , little one for catching livies and a bigger one for slinging the livies out ... I need help in identifying which fish to use as live , what size is good , and how to hook them up eg. Single hook through jaws , spine , tail ? Gang Hooke etc .. Also whats the best way to fish with livies from land like e sheds , rock piers , jettys etc I have been sinking them with a good bit trace on with no luck and I've seen lads ballooning etc , any tips ? Cheers everyone that assists .. Got a pic of what I normally catch on the bait chasing rig just after confirmation if they're good for live

Herring is the top one and yellowtail the bottom.. In my opinion yellowtail live is the best bait ever.. Have caught so many good fish on them..

I use a single 6/0 or 7/0 hooked lightly on the head side of the dorsal fin..

Hope this helps.  Belly

Yep ya got a herring and a yakka (yellowtail) they both are good baits, from what I've seen yakkas are better livies than herring, but if you use strip baits of herring that can be effective too, considering you catch them both at the same place they should both be good for live baits or dead baits (herring are good dead as long as they are fresh from my own experience) as for rigging a livie it depends if you want to balloon from what I've seen you shouldn't put weight, but if not ballooning you should use a bit of weight just to get it down in the water colum a bit. and for putting them on the hook if you're using a single hook rig you put it behind the head but above the spine so it stays live also you should use a wet towel/rag to handle any fish you want to use as a livie so it stays alive as long as possible

the grey line is the spine. the picture is just a rough but it should show you roughly the location to pin ya livie, good luck mate.

Hooking them like that is

Hooking them like that is okay in most situations but if in some current hook them through the top jaw (hook pointing up) and they will not spin and stay live a lot longer.

Another choice

is to hook them above the spine just near the tail but a little forward to avoid the spine. Found this a lot better with fish that attack prey head first, especially coral trout up north.
