Plenty of Crabs in Mandurah

Went for a crab session with the kids this morning. Very impressed with the amount of crabs around. We got our boat limit of 20 in 90 minutes

Try Potting or Diving

Tue, 2010-01-19 13:54

Just north of the naval exclusion zone near the Officers Mess on the Eastern side of the Garden Island.  Depths between 2-6mts for diving, and maybe a couple of pots out deeper.

sounds good

Saw a few people scooping SILLY. We were in shallow water not far from the shore with another dozen boats. No real secret spots with crabbing. It's all about the bait I reckon.

He Uncle ....sounds great but I'm heading up to Moore River this week to give the Bream a hiding. I know a couple of blokes hitting the Sound and they reckon they are getting a feed but hard work. I'd be taking them to Mandurah for a guaranteed feed.

Good size crabs

Tue, 2010-01-19 13:50

Yeah there's really not much need for a crab gauge this year. They are either well beyond legal size or well below. Not many just size crabs out there. Been going out every second or third night and picking up a half dozen good size blueys in the matter of 15 mins or so. Enough for a feed just for myself. Its handy only living 5 minutes from the estuary too!

10 Fatties ooops, 9 Fatties

Tue, 2010-01-19 14:41

just got back from Mandurah crabbing this morning in the yak, had ten sized in the first 10 nets, well 9 nets actually, thanks to the moron in the Blue hull stacer skiíng before the ski zone and chopping my float off.. anyhow, spent the next 4 pulls keeping well oversized crabs (didnt even have to measure, inch to inch and a half over sized) didnt see many females though, caught 33 sized bout 10 undersized blueys and prolly 10 varying size females.. got home to realised i had thrown one too many back and only had 9 in the catchbag, still a good nights feed for a lazy mornings work.

We went out a couple of times over the Xmas/New Year break and got our 20. Both times dropping nets.  We also went out last weekend and got another 20 and they were a bit bigger this time.  I'm heading down this weekend with a few guys from work and hope to get a few more.  Sounds like there are still plenty about.  It amazes me though!  I always see hundreds of boats in the estuary.  There must be zillions of crabs in there.  Maybe it's a result of a closed season and reduced bag limit.  I think 48 and then even 40 per boat was a rediculous amount anyway.  I reckon they've got it right with 20! Not that there are ever any fisheries inspectors there to catch you anyway.  (Ahhhh!  Don't get me started on that!)

bag limits and sizes if you want to see rediculous although they do do measure from a different part.

Nothing rediculous about that

There are millions of them in South Aus. They are like Mandurah at the moment but everywhere, all season long.

That is just silly Big

That is just silly Big Gaz.  There won't be that many there for long if those limits stick.  It would be nice to be able to get a feed all year round here.   That's probably what Mandurah use to be like 50 odd years ago?  I remember about 15 years ago (memory is not my strong point) catching a feed of crabs on fishing lines.  We anchored just outside the cut and we were sick of crabs.  Trying to get some whiting or whatever and all as we could get were crabs.  They just wouldn't let go of the bait.  That was the same year we dropped a line of nets in the estuary on the opposite side of the Peninsula Caravan Park and pulled at least 3 monsters evey net.  Ahhh... They were the days.
