Poppers versus Richter Plugs

Just trying to gather some information. What are your thoughts on using poppers and richter plugs? When do you switch from one to another? Have you found certain conditions suit one over the other? Do certain species prefer one over the other?

sheesh this is a tough one i love plugs but i think the fat-rs will always outfish the plugs . but in saying that i do tend to lean towards the plugs sometimes around the reel shallow reefy areas due to the fact that they cost a whole lot less. in saying that the fat r's still cast the same distance and are a gem but apart from reefy situations i wont usually use them

Plugs

Wed, 2010-08-11 14:20

Plugs are great. As already mentioned they are cheap, and great for casting across the top of shallow reef. Also like that you can change the action of the lure by the speed of your retreive rate. Some days fish will not go to the surface to hit a popper, the plug gets down under the water just enough, to get them too strike. I only wish there smallest plug was another 5grams heavier.

Why don't you

Wed, 2010-08-11 19:00

slip a small barrel sinker in front of the plug.  I'm guessing you want the added weight to improve casting distance.

By the way agreat plug for any type of fish, And maybe replace the treble with a single

I have done well on the white plugs with Coral Trout. Just got some pink ones, going to give them a go soon. I found a med paced retrieve works best for me.

Just switched over the trebles from my Richter plugs

Fri, 2010-08-13 07:58

to single hook set-ups Soupy. They are great lures, but I was finding that I was losing a few good tailor because they were able to spit out the trebles.
The great things about Richters is that they are reasonably cheap, will cast a long way and will bounce of reefs - so you rarely get snagged.

Love the Richter in white

Fri, 2010-08-13 08:10

Havent had as much joy with breen. Cast well, catch well, and ---- Oh damn Im snagged. Ping. Ah well get another out of the bag and get on with it. No tears etc. Not the same I am sure with a Lacunas jig etc. And as for Jay and Brads poppers. Dont even look at them because I would start winging before it is lost.LOL

Expensive Popper

Fri, 2010-08-13 08:28

I've got quite a few what I call expensive poppers (around the $60-$80) mark and they were the reason for the post. Some of the water I'm casting into is only 2-3 feet and the fish are easy upwards of 10kgs. So at that weight and the speed they travel it can often result in a costly exercise.

is the use of the richter

Fri, 2010-08-13 08:41

is the use of the richter plug for distance, that was my first guess the weight to get past the reef, otherwise was thinking lighter poppers?

Variety

Fri, 2010-08-13 08:58

Just to give me a bit of variety more than anything else. I've got smaller poppers and less expensive big poppers. I haven't caught a decent fish on a richter plug so I thought I'd sound the forum out and get some good oil on the latest techniques and options.

Soupy your in the tropics now

Fri, 2010-08-13 09:48

as I recall. I find up here that a faster retrieve is better than a slower SW Tailor type retrieve. But at that speed some palagics with swibo teeth will also be attracted to these. And so is the GTs, so you might still loose a few to these situations.

I have left (or upgraded) the trebles as the only fish that shakes like a tailor up here is queenies, but they hook themselves very well (usually). The rest only rarely take to the air. Never tried them on Barra but suspect a single would be much better.

tested

Fri, 2010-08-13 11:20

Tested the plugs trebles out this morning on the huge school of queenies in the channel. Found the trebles are not the best, as alot of fish were getting off. I then changed the trebles to some good quality ones..and bingo, all is good now. In the past i have dropped a few fish on plugs, and just blamed myself...now i only take half the blame..bloody cheap trebles!

single hooks will always

Fri, 2010-08-13 11:33

single hooks will always have a great hook up because its usually a solid lip hook or a deep hook, when i get time im changing all my lures to single hooks, it also helps with catch and release better being able to unhook faster and putting the fish back faster.
