Pot for melting lead

 Hi guys,

anyone got any suggestions what kind of pot I can use / can get one that is easy to melt up some lead in for sinkers? If anyone has something they would sell to me please PM me. Will be using my crab cooker to melt it down. Cheers

An old saucepan will do the job if you are using your crab cooker. Use a hammer to fashion a rough pouring spout.

We found that the crab cooker was a little slow so sourced a oxy set with a blow torch - Was pouring lead as quick as we could empty the moulds. The only downside was the oxy eventually blew the sides out of the aluminum saucepan. Next time will have a steel pot fabricated to handle the heat of the oxy.

Hey Curndog, i went to the 2nd hand shop and found a stainless coffee / tea pot.I cut the strainer out of the spout for easier pour . It will hold enough to fill yr mould twice ( 16 ounce and down type mould ). I found that any more lead than that and it becomes a struggle to pour ,to much weight . We use a 3 ring burner and use the 2 inside rings . Riggers gloves inside welders gloves long pants safety glasses , cheap resporator a spoon to clear the shit of the top of your melted lead and owe yeah heat your mould before you pour lead into it. Plenty of beer and do shifts with yr mate.

The hot mould prevents the lead from setting to quickly and only half filling the mould. You will probably notice this after the first one or two pours. If the mould is hot enough, the lead will fill the mould.

Same as others, I went to the local op shop and got a big stainless pot and also got a metal soup ladle to fill the moulds with and to get rid of the slag off the top

Casting lead

Wed, 2017-02-01 16:32

If your mould is too cold dip the corner of it in the molten lead for a minute before you start casting, once you've started casting the mould will stay hot enough.

Another trick is to put a finger nail sized piece of beeswax in the molten lead and give it a stir, this brings all the dross to the top and makes it easy to skim off.

Secure one half of the mould

Wed, 2017-02-01 22:10

Secure one half of the mould in a vice and get a handle welded onto the other, use a welding glove and push the 2nd mould against the first while your mate pours the lead. Let it cool a sec, pull apart tap out push back together and repeat....

You'll pump em out this way...

Wear goggles and a snorkle to look cool, thats all i got....

Wouldn't recommend it

I wouldn't recommend that.  If you mistime the pour or the bloke holding the second half of the mould sneezes / slips / drops it etc etc, you risk getting molten lead all over your feet.  Personally, I use a G clamp to hold the mould together and wont pour any lead while anyone else is within splash range.

 Small to medium milo tin

Thu, 2017-02-02 20:12

Small to medium milo tin squashed with a v and vice grips is what I use. As others have said get the moulds warm and don't remove the poured sinkers till you're ready to pour the next. That way the moulds retain their heat. Once you get into a routine they pour pretty quick.

I found a heap ( about 500kg)

Fri, 2017-02-10 22:10

I found a heap ( about 500kg) on gumtree and melted it all down to ingots, used a cup cake tray. Took a fair while and ended up with about 300kg of ingots.
I used a cheap stock pot to melt about 8 ingots (about 3.5 kg) in the big pot and transfer the molten lead to a smaller pot in easy to handle amounts and in turn into moulds. I used a couple of cheap pots from Big W and vice grips
I was doing 1 x 12, 2x 16,2x 24 & 1 x 32 and I smashed them out using this method.
Kept the moulds together with G clamps and made sure they were hot all the time as made filling them much easier.
I reckon I did close to 300kg over the last 12 months split between me & a mate.
We wont ever run out in our lifetimes we reckon and pics tell the story if they work out.
The last pic shows about 1/4 the total amount.

And don't use silver spoons

as moulds for spoon shaped sinkers either.  I did that over 50 years ago and my mother didn't appreciate it.  The spoon and the sinker became one.

I use a 89 x 89 mm steel post cap. $5.20 at Bunnings.

Sits nicely on a LPG burner.

And use a pair of vice grips to pick it up.
