Preserving Bait

G'day Guys,

Just wondering if anyone has bothered with preserving baits (salting and drying), mulies in particular.

I have never done it, but was thinking it might be an idea for easily storing bait while camping out up the North-West.

We hit the road in 3 weeks so was thinking I should get cracking with it.

I was thinking of salting, drying and then vacuum packing them with the trusty sunbeam.

If anyone has any thoughts or hints it would be greatly appreciated.

Am I correct in assuming that once preserved you can dry store them (not fridge or freeze)??

Cheers,

Scott

Heavily salting the fish, drying them and then packing them will preserve them to a degree where you don't need to freeze them.Vacuum packing makes it very handy to transport.

thanks for the help guys, and thanks for the offer wopjrb - but I am down in sunny Albany, so driving up to Hillaries and back will take me all day... I might be able to chase down a copy of the mag from here. I might have to buy a few bags of salt while I am at it.

my old man salts his prawns

my old man salts his prawns for whiting fishing when he goes up to shark bay, salting makes the bait last longer as well as making it a bit tougher so it wont come off the hook as easy, i tried it with mulies once but you need shit loads of salt for those things but they keep better
