Prolific Spanish mackerel?

The Bluewater metro report this week suggested that "Spanish mackerel are prolific..."

We spent nearly three hours or so trolling the West End yesterday. Conditions were good with the water temp around 22.5 degrees, clean blue water and little to no weed so hopes were high. Baitfish on the sounder were sitting lower in the water column so we used deep divers of various colours, Halco and X-Raps but had no luck.

I realise that a three hour trawl is not putting in much time but here have been no recent reports from members on here of Spaniards so how prolific are they at the moment?

Hmmm, "prolific"..

Sun, 2018-02-04 12:26

Some tackle stores go a bit far in trying to generate enthusiasm,( and sell lures ) methinks..

They haven't been prolific up here this year, in fact they have been more or less totally absent--must'v decided to bypass us, although I haven't been updated on the last few days, as I' m away at work.

A report of one off point Peron towards 5fb yesterday and a work colleague was getting them off fremantle on Friday though he seemed to put a few hours in before they woke up.

Same here day before

Put in a similar effort on Friday near West End with ideal conditions. Lots of baitfish and birds working but no luck trolling. Eventually gave up and did reasonably well bottom bashing south of Rotto on way home.

We trolled behind the reef from Two Rocks up towards Moore River from sunrise, and then later in the day on the top of the Bank for not even a hit. Had high hopes too

Sun, 2018-02-04 20:07

I think prolific may be the incorrect word to use, prolific is what the salmon where in the metro last year.

I don't take much notice of the fishing reports from any stores sorry. Can't say I've seen many pictures on Macks on any FB pages either.

Was up Kalbarri 2 weeks ago 24 degree water, more bait then you would believe, trolled skirts and deep divers for not even a touch.

Be interesting to see what happens over the next month.

Has been catches of half dozen fish per session in some boats. I'm happy calling that prolific for Perth

So much bait in the metro atm.

A few stragglers here and there have been reported. My advice, wait 2 weeks..., they’ll fire up then.

some people might be putting in the time

Sun, 2018-02-04 22:38

but doesn't mean you were in the right place at the right time had the lure swimming in the correct depth , trolling the current line or in the ideal water temp.

Mon, 2018-02-05 09:13

I went for a troll out of Mindarie on Saturday and managed to get a SBF tuna near the Gemini wreck. We headed out to direction bank after that and saw some bird action and managed to get a double hookup of striped tuna. Didn't see any mackeral around, but they usually hang out where the tuna are.

Most metro spaniards....

Mon, 2018-02-05 10:25

...are coming on trolled baits, not lures. Which is usually the case.

  sometimes gotta think

Tue, 2018-02-06 09:56

sometimes gotta think outside the box. When the water gets warmer and they fire up they'll smash fast divers behind boats. Till then a slow perfectly presented swim bait is the go. Presentation is the key

Had a few

Mon, 2018-02-05 11:29

We had a few around the boat last weekend - anchored, burleyed and could see them charging through the trail every now and then.

Put a stickbait out and missed a hookup and couple of follows before they vanished - was spewing.

Most of the biggies come out of the burley trail

Tue, 2018-02-06 14:03

At west end anytime of day or around reefs etc.bit more laid back just drifting a mulie out the back but when one hits you'll  know about it. Deep divers will catch there share.
