Props

Just curious as to what the difference is between stainless props and the painted steel ones? do you get any better speeds out of the stainless as there isnt any paint or are they just there to give the boat a bit of bling

Painted steel...

...I think you are actually referring to aluminium props...ali ones are cheaper to replace, and have more "give", which means if you hit something the prop blades are more likely to break/bend before the more expensive gearbox does!

My old 40hp Yamaha 2's had ali props and my 90hp E-tec has a stainless one. Performance is obviously better due to more hp and 25 years difference in technology, so I personally can't vouch for either stainless or ali in that regard.

yer ali more give which means u have less chance of bending shafts if u hit something where as stainless is more strong and cost a hell of a lot more. but the bling looks nice

Painted stainless

Yea Russ , dont know why most of the new motors come out of the factory with a black painted stainless steel prop rather than polished stainless, i assume that the black painted stainless is a lower quality steel and is cheaper than the polished units which i belive are also balanced for better performance

No idea, but it is done. A friend's cat has painted black stainless props on it, not positive, but perhaps they came with the yammy motors.

Bit of a stretch to say that only unpainted ones are a lower quality steel and unbalanced though.

i was told stainless steel props grip the water better and also allow the moter to be raised up further

not too sure what raising the engine up does ??

Painted ones

painted ones are the cheaper ones. I did a bit of homework about these a while back. They are made of a lower grade of stainless.

I'd re do that home work

Thu, 2009-12-31 16:25

I'd re do that home work then . Just really two different finishes..

No prop is pure stainless steel as if it was it would be too brittle, too easy to smash and mostly too heavy and would wreck gear box dog clutches..

Props are a mixture of metals and yes they will if not panted get surface browning( very lightly). Polished props are coated and polished to look spiffy for want of a better definition..

Polished stainless is also bling to a scumbag thief's eyes. Happy to stick with incognito black on mine.

Better economy

Fri, 2010-01-01 07:43

I looked at the stainless vs painted props awhile back - the stainless , because they don't flex, increase your torque as MM said - this in turns improves your fuel efficiency.  If you use your boat a lot, it is probably worth paying the extra dollars for a stainless prop.
