putting wrong oil into motor

hi guys

I  was wandering if anyone could help me. I have a Tohatsu 60hp motor. Over the weekend I drained the oil out of the lower level(where propeller is).

I accidently, removed a spark plug and added 4 squirts with an oil can of 10w oil in the engine. Would this damage the engine or will I be able to run my auto lubed engine for about 15-20mins to flush the that oil out. My auto lube oil is the correct oil, but i added the 10w oil to the engine as i thought it was how you top up the lower engine oil, which isn't even the correct oil, as this should be SAE80-90. Will My engine be damaged or will it eventually be flushed out cause it isn't much that i added?

Please can someone save my Motor??????????????

Whoa. Whole lot of things

Whoa. Whole lot of things wrong here. The 4 pumps of oil you put into the spark plug hole will be fine. Just pull the plugs out and turn the motor over to remove any excess. Im guessing after a few days that will be minimal anyway. Put the plugs back in and should start and run fine if a little smokey for a moment.

The gearbox oil in the leg is a totally seperate issue. I would not run the motor until that has been refilled. On the side of the leg around 20cm up should be another stainless screw that looks exactly like the one you removed from the bottom to drain the oil. This is the upper filler point and limit. You want to top the oil up to there. A boat shop can sell you the 1l bottles of oil with the clear tube that makes getting the oil into the leg easier.

Hope this helps. Its an easy job to service your own motor but you do need to know a few tricks.

I'm not a 100% sure , but i don't think it would be a problem.

It might blow a bit of smoke to start with but wont damage anything . ( might oil up the spark plugs a bit)

Maby other members would know more about engines.

PS.. Good advise dodgy, if it was gear oil , get it out first.

from lower leg up to get air

from lower leg up to get air out.

quicksilver (mercury) actually do a little pump that fits in the oil bottle and screws into the lower plug hole so filling it up is a breeze!

The pump fitting ddoes NOT fit on a yamaha leg and you can make your own nipple to overcome this.

gear oil

The mercury fitting is different to the tohatsu fitting. You need to take the top and bottom drain screws out. Replace the fibre washers on the screws. Fill the gearcase from the bottom, when the oil comes out of the top hole screw the top screw in, then quickly screw the bottom screw in. you have have 2 screws at the top of the box one will be marked wash and the other oil. its the oil screw you want to remove. use marine gearbox oil.
