A question about all the small pinkies

following up on a comment on another thread...
On my usual spot on Saturday SE of rotto chasing KG the undersize pinkies were like flies. Typically 220 but up to 290mm. Even on the sand picking a pinkie every second cast - as quick as the sand whiting.
My question: is it normal for this time of year or is it possible the closed spawning has worked? I presume these are this seasons brood but they must grow awfully fast to get this big so quick - mind you they seem hungry.

Dhu Fish
Would or could it be possible that since the banning of fishing for Snapper in the sound while they aggregate up for breeding has seen the huge increase in numbers of small/juveniles,around the Perth waters. If it is due to this ban, then could the same apply to our favorite and popular Dhu fish, maybe,if we endorse the proposed ban/moratorium on these fantastic fish while they are breeding we may see an increase in their numbers in 5/10 years, but I would only support a ban IF all fishing for them both Professional and charter, and recreational was empossed, no half measures, just my thoughts, someone may feel the same or different so please lets continue the debate in the hope that we all gain from any closer of the season,I agree the Pros will squeal but if a fish taken from the sea is full of roe and not had time to breed it is gone forever,it must be all who stop fishing during this time. jersey

Hey im with you on that one
But here is some food for thought.
On the land does a farmer ever get rid of his breading stock while in their prime??
So on the water why do we remove the breeders? Agree there needs to be sizes and limits on numbers.
Hey guys just thought I would throw that one in for some comment.

Protecting Dhufish while spawning
Pink snapper and Dhufish have very different approaches to spawning.
Pink snapper collect together in a few places like Cockburn Sound and can easily be protected. Yes Cockburn Sound is very important for the breeding success of Pink Snapper, so protecting the adult fish during spawning must have a big impact on the number of juvenile fish.
Dhufish don't collect together like that in just a few small areas or places, so protecting big "spawning aggregations" isn't possible.
There's lots and lots of info in part answers to your questions in "Management and Monitoring of Fish Spawning Aggregations within the West Coast Bioregion of Western Australia" http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/docs/frr/frr187/index.php?0401
Well worth a read by anyone who is interested in finding out some facts about this very complicated question - which doesn't have any EASY answers.

With all this Little Pinkies about
We should be happy, and just possibly think that some of the "hated" restrictions might actually help us in the future.
Food for thought.
