Quick dash to K-Town

Just got back from a quick trip to pick up my boat from Exmouth and managed to pop into Karratha as well for a few days to catch up and have a fish with Brad. Unfortunately for me the weather didn't care I'd driven 3500km and blew for most of my stay. Brad and I got up a creek one arvo to fish the evening bite but 20-30kt easterlies, falling water temps and big tides meant slow fishing. I jumped off a 80cm barra within the first 15mins but that was it. We weren't prepared to camp up the creek but the trip back was going to be sh*t so we sat around deciding what to do. We ended up deciding to leave so Brad made a temporary blanket out of a towel and I spooned his centre cab to try to get a little sleep while we waited for the tide to rise so we could get out. The trip home was slow and average but we made it, finally hitting the hay at 1am.

After a day off to recoup we decided to try again, this time mother nature was a little kinder with the weather, not smooth but far better than the day before. We got into the same creek and cast and trolled for a few hours with no luck. Once the tide was low enough we (well Brad, I was just the bucket b*tch) went off chasing bait. The first few throws were empty and we started looking at each other wondering if we were in for another long night. Brad perservered and we ended up with a bucket full of whiting and mullet for the session. Well it turned out to be a good one at that, with numerous runs and hook ups. Between us we landed 4 threadfin salmon between 90-99cm and a 87cm barra to Brad, and lost a few more barra too. All in all a good day/night was had, but unfortunately for me I think I've found my hoodoo- Pilbara barra. I've had 5 attempts now and still haven't landed one with Brad. Still I've got a few frequent flyers points saved up for early next year to try again.

Good luck next weekend Huggy, I hope the weather is kinder to you than it was to me, and I hope you're feeling fit enough to chase Brad around the flats with a 20kg bucket in your arms while he's collecting bait.

and raring to go Tim! Unlucky to not have landed one in all your time(s) up there. But at least you are finding them, sometimes thats half the battle!

The weather gods look to be smiling upon me a little so far, although I think a GT pop is off the agenda. Sucks, but I'll have to be happy with barra's........such a shame! Tongue out

20kg bucket?

Mon, 2009-11-23 21:42

He's playing you for a fool tim! LOL

Get a 20 litre and drill a heap of holes through the top half of it, attach a rope, and you can leave it in the water so water flows through while your waiting for the netter to catch them. Then pick it up, let 10 litres drain out the top, carry it to net, put bait in and then drop it back in the creek. Keeps them heaps fresher than a 20l full of stale water.

Can also double as your live bait tank by tying it the side of the boat and throwing it over while your anchored. One thing though, make sure the lids on tight.:)

thats exactly what i have done BJ, i think Tim is just having a whinge. He did have to carry it accross a sandbar though, and he did look a little tired half way across so i took the bucket from him and did it myself, hahaha.
He forgot to mention too that in the times he has been here it was the middle of august water temp less than 22 degrees and now water temp was 25.8. He has also dropped about 8 fish by now too. definately his hoodooooooooo, and i kept reminding him of it as well..

yeah John that's the set up

yeah John that's the set up he uses but he's like a kid on speed when he's tearing all over the sand bars chasing bait. It's not as bad as I made it sound, just giving Huggy a rev up. At least it wasn't 40C plus when we've been doing it.
And Faulkners, we would've gone up sooner but that thing called work got in the way!
