Radio Coverage for up to 100km off Perth Waters
Submitted by bigedd on Fri, 2018-10-26 11:54
Hi guys,
I recently found out that a VHF radio at best might have communication with Sea Rescue up to 15km out. Is this correct and what radio would work for say up to 100km if you needed assistance??
Is UHF any better??

They are a lot cheaper than they used to be but not cheap! Keep an eye out on gumtree - they come up every now and then.
Out of interest - what are you doing 100km offshore...? Rottnest trench is about 45kms - just deep water after that :-)

Channel 81
Try channel 81 repeater on Rottnest Island, that should give you coverage out another 25nm further out

Nope
Its not that good.
We run Billfish tournaments at the trench and can struggle to get coverage much past the fads at times.
The repeater isnt in the best spot to cover out there. If it was moved it might be better

I think that you will need
A special licence to operate a HF radio set which will mean you will have to go and do a TAFE course, could be wrong but I don't think your VHF licence is going to cover the operation of a HF set.

Yes to opperate a HF set you need what was the MROCP or now called the long range operarors certificate LROCP. On top of this you need apply for a ship station license which attracts a yearly fee.

No reported problem with the repeater this morning ,call's taken from thomson bay were ok.Would suggest anyone going out to the fad's/trench do a radio test call to check and if there is a problem they can fix it.Hate to think with Summer coming and offshore breezes you would have a engine problem and drift off to Madagascar, cant anchor out there.

VHF 82
If you’re going out of Mandurah you’ll be better off trying the Pinjarra repeater on VHF 82.

As the old saying goes
"WHY DIDN'T YU CALL"
Would suggest next time your out do a test call. But in saying that your direct line of comm's would probably be to Call Sign: VMR 611 .
