They ask because the standard and quality vary so much between chefs and rigs...
We had one chef who was exceptional WA waters but had to do night shift and then we had a "rostered" fitter and turner for the evening meal.
Drill crew used to come in a plate up their dinner from the night chef and eat cereal for the fitter and turners efforts.
The fitter used to fry or grill but couldnt cook especially wet meals.
We also had exceptional food on drill ship west africa from a french chef and 5 nm away on a semi they served sloppy north sea stoge from a scottish/ british crewed rig full of angry head butting chucters.........
I worked on a jack-up rig off Saudi and the second day on the cooks (indian) had a huge blow up in the galley. Stuff being broken and slaps being heard while I was trying to enjoy my curry lunch. I had a chat to the Camp Boss after it settled down and discovered that they also had been on the rig for just over 12 months?? couldn't believe it. They hardly even went out of the accommodation because the Saudi's gave them hell. My 28/28 rotation wasn't whinged about while I was working over there. I also did a 7 week tow from India (Bay of Bengal side) to Egypt once on a Semi-sub. It wasn't to bad as the Indian cooks were outstanding.. They used to ambush us aussie blokes though with the mild curry actually being something that Satan dragged up from the bottom levels of hell. I still have burn marks on my blurter from those curries. Good times.
personally don't see this vent as a problem to FW. Plenty of good actual fishing posts here and 30 sec read for a bit of light hearted humour from someone who has contributed to the actual "fishing" posts side of things.
May have something to do with the fact that I can relate....(prob a lot on here can)....having spent a considerable chunk of my life at sea and working rigs but no harm done to anyone.

haha cabin fever!
Theres no bloody good askn you ,-- the chef,--- mate because you will all say , its bloody five star.
Dont worry , you blokes are far tougher than some ( including me) I do week on , week off , and start bitching
and moaning after 4 days on , haha.
Quick story , worked with a Indian bloke ( a boily) up north , whom said after working for year straight in India , was called
into the bosses office , and was thinking , gee I getting the arse , but instead was offered 5 days off , to visit family , cause
the company thought he might be going a bit loopy!, beat that roster , year on , 5 days off!
