raymarine - which 1kw transducer ???

been getting some varied advice on the best way to go for a 1kw transducer...

the 2 options i have it short listed to are an in hull wet box type transducer and a through hull 20 degree transducer

the shipwright im going to use reccomends the through hull but when i speak to the dealers they are trying to talk me into the wet box in hull style. they both seem absolutely confident about there option being the best way to go....

the arguments so far consist of....

im told by my shipwright the wet box in hull transducer loses 15 - 20% power by having to shoot through the fibreglass hull and the possibility of any small air bubbles in the existing glasswork can cause issues....however the dealer assures me this isnt a concern and they work extremely well regardless...

the through hull transducer im told by the dealer can be a concern - obviously having broken the integrity of the hull by drilling a hole for it to go through...

( this is a 24 foot fibreglass trailer boat )

most of the time ill be fishing fairly shallow for demersals however i do want the capability to go deep 300+ when i get the itch...

opinions as always appreciated

have attached photos of either option.... the through hull potrudes 6mm and the raymarine website says it is strong enough to sit on trailer rollers etc without hurting it....

Broad Band

Fri, 2012-09-07 15:34

Broad Band Sounder/Structurescan Clearpulse CHIRP modules are the new way of searching for Fish and structure, this will replace sonar based systems.

This system reveals a much greater detail and has a better coverage of the area with a lot less blanks in between.

Have a look at this before you part with $$.

There is a lot of info in the current Ray Marine 2012 catalogue regarding this.

and in the other brands for that matter.

The real issue what to get is with the head units and the processing capabilities to run these new innovations that are now coming through from a great many brands.

CHIRP is developed by the supplier /maker of the sonar modules and therefore all brands can buy/get this system in their lineup and that will guarantee that it will become the standard very soon.

How much extra is involved in going down the chirp route ?

Found this link to show real screen pics , and while definately nice looking , hardly night and day from a decent digital screen.

By better coverage , do you mean a wider cone angle?

No with better coverage I mean the gap between the signal bounce.

Seeing it in real live on a boat operating is where the difference comes from.

It is interesting to read how it operates and the differences between the technology how it gets better.

Bit like points operated ignition/carburators and Multi Point Fuel systems.

Definitely keen for that convoy mate :-)

Looks like I'm drilling the hole - thanks for all the advice, better to trust a shipwright than a salesman I reckon and most of you guys seem to have done it without any issue.... besides.... There's already holes for water intakes for live bait, toilet etc, one more wont hurt ;-)

Also considering the lowrance 10 with structure scan in your opinion which would you go for
