rays at north mole.

hey guys, im after some quick info. Im at the mole right now and the wind seems to be going south. Now i usually fish to the right of the lighthouse if your facing it. Has anyone ever caught any rays on the oppisite side or even in the estuary of where the rotto boats dock? Just wondering where i should setup. Any rays on the left side or is there too much traffic?

they prefer the calmer

they prefer the calmer waters dont they? Im guessing when theres swell, they shy out to deeper waters. Im tryin0to decide whether to setup in the estuary or the left side.

you can use any whole

Fri, 2009-01-16 14:41

you can use any whole fish really

just sit it on the bottom and wait

they are not fussy

ive caught in rough and calm weather (when i say catch i mean hook up to, bitches to land)

just leave a stinking bait on the bottom and theyl eventually find it and suck on it and eventually take the whole bait then u strike

got 1, lost one. Had 2 lines

Fri, 2009-01-16 15:57

got 1, lost one. Had 2 lines in the water, sat for about 20 mins til my drag went off. Took about 10mins tryin to tire it out til my other rod went off. Was in a pickle, 2surfs goin off, i was by myself. When i noticed it was real tired and not really fighting, i stuck the rod in the rocks and kept the drag fairly tight. Went to the other rod and the ray was draggin far left crossing 2 craypots at the same time. This 1 took a while to get tired. Next thing i noticed as i was bringing it in was, it snagged itself in the rocks. After a while i could see the ray but it wasnt where my line was going into the water so i figured the ray went to the left and on top of the rock i was snagged on. I let the drag real loose and put the rod down, hoping it will unsnag itself. I left it there for about 20 mins but still stuck, so i cut my losses and my line. No choice i suppose. Now by this time i was completely knackered, went back to the first rod and the ray was dead tired and it came in easy, got it close then i was tryin to figure out how i was gonna do this by myself, then whoohoo! A guy and a few of his kids rocked up and came and looked at what i was doing. They gave me a hand to haul it up. Lucky! Well it is now in the boot and will soon be marinated for tonights dinner.

I didnt bring anything to weigh or measure it today BUT its damnheavy lol. seems very close to the weight of the tele in my room, and my tele is 40kg. being unco to carry and stuff, im guessing a minimum of 25-30 kg. seems heavier then the 20kg bags of rice i buy

Fishing is boring, unless you catch an actual fish, and then it is disgusting.

I've tasted Eagle Ray, and

I've tasted Eagle Ray, and I'm not sure if theres a cleaning/bleeding method, but mine had a funny, almost bitter aftertaste. Got heaps of meat off it though. Now i just let them go.

I haven't tried the dark grey/black rays though.

I got to say I hate rays

There is nothing worse than having a Mulloway bait out and you get a big run and it's a stingray.

haha

That's all that happens to me when I put out a bait for mulla in the metro. I get rays. Been thinking about a cork rig to keep the bait off the bottom when beach fishing. Puts an end to crabs and rays.

But I wonder, if mullas are tentative biters (which from what I've read, they are), would a chunky cork put them off the bite?

The cork idea is supposed to be okay with the Mulloway

Sat, 2009-01-17 13:03

I have read that if you attach the cork with electrical cork you should not use a bright colour though.

Had bbq ray up in Singapore

Sat, 2009-01-17 11:50

Had bbq ray up in Singapore before.

Tasted great.

Not sure what type of ray it was, but certainly worth a try.

Never kept one myself locally to fillet and try, always too damn big to drag into the boat.

Ant tips Chan on processing them ?

Nothing wrong with a bbq

Sat, 2009-01-17 12:23

Nothing wrong with a bbq ray, you cut the white flesh parts from under the wings of the ray, soak them in milk for 24 hours and then crumb them up and add a few herbs and spices and cookem up on the BBQ's

We have done a few our self's in 2006 and 2007, kids seem to enjoy them.

How to Clean

Sat, 2009-01-17 16:05

Put a small slit all the way through the outer edge of each flap[hand holds as they are bloody slippery]Cut from alongside the snout/nose to the outer edge of the fins near the tail.
Slice the steaks off about 1/2 inch thich from along the meat side of the flap. Some people like to cut the steak in half removing the line of cartiledge down the middle,I've found it easier to leave it in .Trim the skin off from round the outside ,dip in egg ,then breadcrumbs and drop in the pan.Dash of lemon or vinegar and away you go.Some of the bigger fishmarkets sell it under the name of skate

You scrape the slimey stuff

Sun, 2009-01-18 21:13

You scrape the slimey stuff off it first with a knife then give it a quick boil to let you remove the skin easier then you cut the wing minus the cartillage into whiting fillets then drown them in milk overnight to get rid of the excess blood. Getting rid off the skin fast gets rid off that strong fishy taste that rays have. When cooking i like to play with ingredients abit. Last time i lightly panfried it in extra virgin olive oil, diced garlic and shallots then sprinkled freshly cracked seasalt and four seasons pepper when it was simmering and nearly ready. Came out pretty tender and sweet.
