RE-post Work experience / employment

 Hey my fellow fishwreckers ,

I have recovered this Topic from the archives of Fishwrecked , saves creating yet another post. My previous post is noted below.

I am still in the same situation as before and have put in a countless ammount of time and effort into resume's cover letter's etc with nothing more then rejection letters and a few interviews only to get beaten to the finish line by somone who has a tonne of experience. I have been considering for a couple of months now to maybe pursue or go down a different career path . At the moment I am working in the most unorganised , disfunctional warehouse an I am over it . I would like to get out of this environment and into something more fulfilling where I can advance in career / pay . The way this company is structured it is simply impossible to advance in pay or up the ladder . I have been looking for work in my field for over 12 months now. I live south of the river and am looking for ongoing fulltime work something stable as do have responsibilities . Preferably I would like a professional work environment , somewhere I can enhance my professional skills. If not I am more than willing to develop my skills in other areas, anything to get out of this dead beat job I am working. I know there are alot of people on fishwrecked who have there own business's and possible links into other fields of work. So just putting my feelers out .  Feel free to comment below or Pm if you would like to know any extra details. Appreciate if people have nothing but negatives to say to not say them at all , As I beleive I have done everything in my power to get work experience and find better employment.

Cheers in advance again .

( PREVIOUS POST ) As the title suggests i am looking for work experience or employment preferably in my field of study . Having a hard time getting a look in anywhere . Iv completed a degree in enviro sustainability science , since then basically been working a warehouse job . Iv tried seek , wa jobs etc without any luck so far . If anyone could offer some advice, assistance ,or possibly paid work experience / employment that would be awesome. Im dedicated and focussed i work hard just want to succeed in my field of study . So at this point in time im exhausting and using every resource possible to try and get my foot in the door .

 Cheers in advance

 Join the queue mate,

My daughters in the same boat.

Mining boom has eased and with it the plethora of enviro based jobs that existed when you started your degree.

Shes currently trying to get into any job admin etc with one of the companies that were previously hiring professional grads in the hope that when they start hiring again her foots in the door. Good luck with your search.  Maybe use this time to travel/fish? :-)

Good luck mate, my missus is having the same problem.  Enviro degree plus all the quals and works for Gorgon as a quarantine inspector and still can't get into enviro, its a tough field unless you got a hookup.

Enviro jobs

Fri, 2014-01-17 17:56

Dhuboi I know exactly how you feel.  Ive been working as an enviro for a few years in a mining company but it was a long hard road to get here.  I couldnt get work for ages after uni as all the jobs ask for prior experience.

I'm not sure if they still do it but there are sometimes volunteer programs at Department of Parks and Wildlife (formerly DEC). i used to be involved in some of these a few years ago and a couple of people that volunteered with us ended up getting jobs so you can give that a try.

If you want to get into mining it'll probably be even more difficult as there are relatively few jobs compared to a few years ago. Our company has gone from an enviro graduate intake of over 10 per year, to only 1 in 2014.  When you apply for jobs make sure you spend a lot of time on your resume and really try and distinguish yourself from the 100 other people applying, have seen a lot of resumes and the good ones definitly stand out from the masses.  Also make sure you tailor your resume and CV to that particular role you are applying for.

No luck yet DhuBoi? I'm in the mining sector at the moment working as a mill operator at Agnew Gold Mine. Not overly happy here so have been looking elsewhere and there is absolutely bugger all around. Even iron ore has quietened down from what I've heard. I'm just lucky to have got my foot in the door a few years ago and just have to put up with the crap here till everything picks up again one day. Will keep an ear out with the company I'm with and if I see anything pop up, I'll send you a PM with the link or let you know to contact HR and hopefully you can find your way in. Good luck mate

Yeh no luck yet Tadpole , bloody ridiculous. I have a few friends in mining , one got laid of the other the contract got revoked. And one just scored a 4 month contract not alot but its something. For myself I need something stable cant pay the mortage the missus will kill me lol. Much appreciated look forward to seeing you PM . any help is good help.

I have considered doing alot of other things post grad in OHS , post grad in a specific area of science. Whilst its a great idea I want to start earning some good money and its the balance of working and studying again that atm i think will kill me lol . But it is on the cards.  cheers shark1

Sat, 2014-06-28 19:00

It's a crap degree, 1st to go when times get tough. I moved from Qld when it was going good and now there are over 100 applicants for each job. Mine shut down last year and took heaps of time off with a redundancy to fish but got really nervous after 6months. Ended up getting a gig through an old work mate. The OHS quals might heap and keep applying. Try field technician roles till it picks up

Sat, 2014-06-28 19:12

I'm pretty much in the same boat, I have a diploma in Workplace Health and Safety, a Crt IV in training and assessing and near on 30 years in Mining, Refining and Power Generation, but at 53, nobody wants to know me, they'd rather employ some young person straight out of uni who might have some education, but seriously lack life and communication skills where they are my strong points. I just hope my chances improve somewhat when we move back to the city.

Cheers

Dale

I know I will be shouted down

Mon, 2014-06-30 07:21

But seriously consider getting into a career in insurance claims (NOT domestic home or motor but commercial or workers compensation)  .................I have been doing it over 43 years and have never been bored. The money is good for the average person and brilliant if you strive to excel , six figures is not that unusual.

I get to handle mining, industrial, marine, and that is every day quite commonly.  Have travelled the world attending catastrophe situations, am extremely well paid and now only work four days a week.

No it isn't mining and it is five days a week sitting for the most part in an office but it pays the bills, continually gives the brain a work out and in the commercial area is never boring.

Good luck !

Mate, just gotta keep at it

Mon, 2014-06-30 09:02

Mate, just gotta keep at it itll be alot of quiet then bang! Took me a while, I found work as a removalist after starting to loose heart and then as I was carrying someone's couch up some stairs

i had a phone call with a job offer ( someone IDE previously sent résumés to but never heard back like so many others) after that job offer, I was walking back to the truck for second couch when another phone call with another job offer from another company, Then another one later that day,

I truly believe the saying that "when it rains if pours" now,

i truly hope you get what your after mate, just keep on hounding companies! Or perhaps join a recruitment agency?

just be wary that sometimes if a company has a job position ope up and you've already sent a résumé to them previously they sometimes will wipe the board and start fresh, leaving your CV in the recycle bin

All the best mate! Truly hope it pours for you!
