Cockburn sound snapper

Mon, 2014-06-30 09:25

How to catch Cockburn sound snapper is by far the most commonly asked question during this time of year for us in the store.

There are a few key points to focus on when targetting Cockburn sound snapper:

Using your sounder: This is an invaluable piece of equipment on your boat so use it!  Dont just rock up to any random spot and anchor then burley. Burley will attract fish to your boat that are in the immediate area not from half a mile away. So if possible get onto the water a couple of hours earlier than you wish to start fishing and spend the time sounding around structures and search for the fish. If you cant see fish on your sounder they are not there.

Where to find Snapper: Snapper will hold up against structures or around it. If you sound them over random sand with no structure within a 150m radius then it means these fish are moving and will not be interested in feeding. Move to the next spot. There are plenty of lumps and bumps marked on any good hard copy chart or GPS SD card for example Navionics. Bounce between these marked spots and see if there are any fish holding on them, You may even find an awesome spot that wasnt already marked on the charts and that may hold fish too. The Sound is a breeding ground for these snapper which peak populations inside the sound are around September-November and surprise surprise the ban correlates with that time frame mostly. So at this time of year you are better off targetting the numbers which will be located outside the sound. Areas like Mewstone, Stragglers, Five fathom bank are all key areas for this time of year.

Anchoring: Spend time getting your anchor and boat positioned correctly. If you have to pull the anchor 3 times in order to have the fish directly behind the boat then do so. Spending 30 minutes setting an anchor can save you hours of fishless time.

Feed/Bite times: Sunrise and sunset time periods are feeding times for snapper. So be prepared and in position to have lines in the water well before these times. Also the cheap $6.60 Anglers Almanac supplies both the peak and minor feed times! Its a cheap investment and is always correct when it comes to shallow water snapper and when they will feed.

There is plenty more info to be told and we are more than happy to help you instore. So drop through and we can hopefully get you onto more Cockburn sound snapper!

Also use tides4fishing, it gives you the tides and the best bite times.

Good one to check out before a trip.
