Re power for old 21ft glassy

Hi all looking at re power for my 21 offshore pacemaker had a 150 Johnson 2 stroke looking at 150 merc 4 stroke. Wondering what options others have gone for on similar size boats and any info I should be aware about would be appreciated. Cheers

A mate just repowered a 610

Sun, 2016-08-28 10:19

A mate just repowered a 610 signatue from 150 opti to the new merc 150 4st.

So good. Crazy mid range torque. Real quiet and great on fuel.

Changed my view on mercs.

Having said that though. All the newies are going to be a.big improvement on where youve come.from.

On a heavy boat like yours torque rules. Displacement.

Cheers Craig

in line 4

I have just repowered my 6.5m ali from a 150 saltwater series (2 stroke) to a 200 inline 4 (4 stroke)
The weight difference was only 13kg so wasn't an issue going up to the 4 stroke
Not sure if you're looking for any more HP but if you are the options now days are crazy and if weight is a factor definitely consider the inline 4 engines.

Going the 150 merc

Pretty much decided on a 20" 4 banger merc used to get 35knts out of the 2 stroke so figure the 4 banger will give us plenty of go

Transom height

You may wish to get the transom height increased from 20" to 25" before you get the motor. Its an easy job for a fibreglasser, shouldn't cost much and will get the Power head of the motor further from the water. Always a good thing. You may also find it easier to find a 25" than a 20" as they are pretty rare these days and may even be more expensive.

2 strokes

No experience with 4 stroke outboards but I think a 150hp 4 stroke will provide same or slighly less "go", due to added weight and not as torquey as a 2 stroke.  Maybe a 175hp 4 stroke might be a better option?

You'll save on fuel though... had a 150hp johnson oceanpro on my old boat, and it was a thirsty f&%ker!

2 stoke to 4 stroke

Hi

Upgraded the Baron from a 150 rude 2 stroke to a suk 140 last year, also chaged the transom to 25" ($1000).

Definetly not as much punch getting on to the plane which is to be expected but cruising at 4000 rpm and fishishg for a day Im using exactly 1/2 of the fuel I used before, no smoke and you can actually hear people talk.

Would have liked to go to a 150 4 stroke but budget just didnt stretch. am happy with the 140.

With the 150 -175 4 stroke I dont think there is a bad engine out there. Would get down to who can provide the best aftersales service and initial price fitted.
