Reasons for Marron Dissapearing
Submitted by Bushyyep on Thu, 2015-01-15 09:37
My old man has a dam down south that at one stage is loaded with marron and they have just dissapered. Around August we had no trouble getting 20 in a couple of hours in pots and over the start of the summer its a fight to get one or two. Is there any reason for them being turned off pots or have they walked to another dam kms away.
This time last year they were playing the game and walking into the pots
And we dont really take that many out of the dam just a few a month
Cheers

Have you had a good look
Have you had a good look around the perimeter for tracks in?
looks like poachers paradise.
We have the opportunists scouring the river here as soon as the winter levels drop.

If water conditions change
they can and do walk, like water heating up and desaturating with O2. But you would find evidence off this because they dont survive long walking out of water. That dam looks pretty cool to me though and would have thought they would thrive in there.
Did some minor research into them years ago for a leading researcher. Was trying to con them into breeding twice a year but this failed.
I would try what Jackalchub suggested.

If they are walking in large
If they are walking in large numbers you are likely to find dead ones around the dam.
Other options are poachers, cormorants/shags and redfin (but they won't get the big ones).
I spent a few years growing up on a trout/marron farm and we had some ponds that they just didnt like and would walk out of, and ended up fencing them with a 30cm high mesh. However not feasible with a huge dam, these were just small purpose built holding ponds.
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

It's a pretty big dam, have you dropped nets all over the place/ in all different depths? I was talking to a mate the other day and he was saying that on his parents farm they have quite a large dam (200m's x 70m's) which they have stoked with marron. But it took them quite a while to find the areas that the marron liked to hang out in. I don't know what reason the marron have for liking different areas of the dam but maybe it's worth a little more exploring.
