Reeltime Mag - Likes and Dislikes

Tim rang me with a good suggestion regarding having a number of pages in the mag showing at the bottom, so you know if you are at page 45 of 92 pages. At the moment it just shows what page you are on.

The call prompted me to put it out there now that the mag is up and running to see if anyone else has any suggestions for improvements. Obviously technical limitations and time etc will be against some of them, but others we should be able to work on for issue 2.

One planned change is to have a "tackle bag" section in each article so you know what gear the writers were using. It will be an icon that you can click on if you want and it will open up the tackle bag to see what's inside.

unusual receipes or just good home tried receipes etc,

how to smoke fish - different hints.

noticed nothing on using reef master winches -  yes I know fellas you are all mainly sports fishing guys - just a thought - cos there are a lot of people that use winches but apart from that fantastic, videos great, pictures great and editorials great. JMO LOL

Page numbers

Wed, 2009-03-04 18:49

I have updated the mag to show the total number of pages as per Tim's suggestion, so you know where you are in the mag at any one time.
If it doesn't show up it means you haven't cleared your cache.

I have no dislikes

Wed, 2009-03-04 19:09

Basically its something for nothing, whats there to dislike about that. I do have ideas for well not improvements just additions.

It is a fishing mag after all so no offence If you think my idea is shit but on fishwrecked forum there are a considerable number of keen divers, might be worth putting a dive segment in, could include catching crays, spearfishing as well as scenic diving.

Curious to see what people think?

Another idea has just popped in, what about a maintenance section, step by step guides to doing routine maintenance and servicing on boats, trailers etc.

Great stuff Kane

Wed, 2009-03-04 19:26

Yep as Jay said a few of the guys dive for a living so there will be plenty of articles above and below the water. I know Gully has some absolutely cracking underwater pics to share in future Issues.
I was also going to talk to Andrew from Commodore and Men-On-Boats to see what we can do in that area in the future.
Keep the ideas coming guys, we have plenty of ideas compiled over the last 9 months of putting this together but need to know what you guys want to see in this type of mag, now that you know what it is capable of (video/interaction/info). I can tell you that we will have rig recipe's and a bunch of "How to's" for various techniques and knots etc again in future issues.
Looking foir a balance between information and entertainment value.

don't know if this is possible...but heres my idea.

For the Contents page, could you link to the individual articles?  That way someone could jump straight to whatever article they wanted to read.  I was looking thru it the other day, but had to leave.  When I pulled it back up I had to start at the beginning and go thru every page to get back where i was.

just a thought!  y'all are doing awesome work with it!

Not sure about the logo...

Wed, 2009-03-04 20:26

IMO the FW Reeltime logo is somewhat "lacking" I guess. Can we get some graphic art work on this? It may look great as a proof but on here it doesn't come over as that professional (or crisp) if you know what I mean??? No disrespect whatsoever.

So far as the tackle bag inclusion is concerned I am all in favour of that as long as the tackle bag is not filled and sponsored (although I am open to sponsorship LOL).

Excellent Magazine

Think the content is great and no changes. As a relative beginner I would appreciate a section on how to set up your tackle properly - such as the instructions published the other day by Kasey L - http://fishwrecked.com/node/11531

Keep up the great work - I hope you can secure the advertising support to make this work in the long term - you have a reader in me!

i LOVED it! I think having a "tackle bag" and diving section are really good ideas. I also second UTIWA's suggestion about the logo. Awesome work guys! Love the veriety of articles aswell as pictures, keep it up. Looking forward to future issues.

Its a simple type font but it looks a bit fuzzy in the banner ad.
Will see if we can fix it or get something a bit sharper

Agree Kasey

Mon, 2009-05-25 09:26

This Issue had to squeeze a lot of text in. Only answer is to reduce the text to say 500 words maximum and increase the number of vids / pics to skew it a bit more visually.

As we get feedback on each Issue we will be looking to structure the mag more to suit what the readers want. I think the format lends itself to more pictorial than text based content.

I will be putting in some guidelines for the writers as we go forward.

Longer stories may have to place the "detail" in rollover sections so it doesn't clutter the pages. All depends on the type and context of the articles as to wether that would work.

But I totally agree and will be looking to improve on that front in Issue 3.

I think if you kept the text

Mon, 2009-05-25 11:19

I think if you kept the text to 500 words it'd be hard to convey anything substantial across!

Maybe just spread it out across more pages, or have more subsections - other than that you are doing a mighty fine job Andy. Thank you

1000 words might be better as a max

Mon, 2009-05-25 15:28

All depends on how many pics and vids we can put with it.

Subscription link

Mon, 2009-05-25 09:13

You can only get in via the broadcast email that issued to subscribers.

To subscribe you have to fill in your name and email address on the page that has the three mag covers on it.

Just underneath there is a subscribe section. submit that then confirm your subscription from the email that comes out (if you do not confirm your subscription you will not get the access emails)

Its only a temporary lag as we will be placing a link to Issue 2 on Fishwrecked shortly.

However I still encourage anyone who wants to view the mag to subscribe anyway so that when Issue 3 comes out you get it straight into your inbox.

loved the tackle bag idea

Sat, 2009-05-30 13:39

loved the tackle bag idea its always nice to see what gear the writer was using to catch hte fish in the artical, it gives us an idea of what gear to look out for if we are into that same sort of fishing. Some give aways would be nice aswell if any of the sponsors feel inclind. apart from that the mag is great better then alot of the one u can pick up at the news agent so pls keep em coming
