Refixing Fold Down Seat in Tinny
Hi all
I have a Stacer 440 tinny, which is a tiller control with a fold-down Springfield seat for the driver that is mounted to the rear bench seat of the tinny via a Kingpin seat mount and deck base. The deck base is (or should I say "was") fixed to the bench seat by 6 bolts and nuts of a type that I have never seen before (a cylindrical thing that has a diameter mot much greater than the bolt that goes thorugh it). I was out crabbing the other day and when I leaned back in my seat to unsnag a pot rope from the leg of the motor, the fold-down seat came free of the bench seat (taking the deck base with it), pulling the "nuts" through the holes in the bench seat.
I now have a bench seat with 1 x 2.5" hole (for the stem on the deck base to go through) and 6 x holes that are around 10mm in diameter.
I was wondering whether anyone had any suggestions about how to re-fix the deck base back to the bench seat, as there is no access from underneath to use traditional bots & nuts, etc? I'm concerned that if I try, say, 12 gage self-tappers, given that the bench seat is only ali they may just pull straight back through with very little effort.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers

I'd go to Bunnings and by a sheet of aluminium and a tube of sikaflex.

The product you are looking
The product you are looking for is called Hollow Bolt or something similar.
They are for bolting where there is only access to one side.
Seems like it might be better to make an access hole and put in a backing plate though, depending on how thick the bench seat is? Might last longer....

Sounds like a nutsert, very similar to a pop rivet type system.

Rivnut is another name
for fitting threads to sheet metal where you cannot tap a thread or get a nut behind. I bought a kit containing both steel and alloy inserts, find it very useful. ebay link to a quick search www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html or go to someone like Hare and Forbes

Thanks guys - having googled it now, I can see that the old fixings were definitely rivnuts/nutserts. I had never seen them before, so you learn something new every day!
Just ordered a 200 piece kit online, and I only need 6 to fix the boat, so I guess I'm going to have to start using them for fixing everything.

Hey, there you go, I learned
Hey, there you go, I learned something too.
I'm in the structural game so sheet metal fixing is something I don't know much about.
Cool.

I've found them very useful
used them in the LV workshop on site, bought a set myself. Used them for securing the sheet ali cabinet on my home-made camp freezer, quick assembly stands for solar panels.....certainly beats putting light stuff together with nuts and bolts.
