Replacing Penn 850

I want to replace my old Penn 850 Spinfisher as it's nearing the end of it's time. I want a reel that is similar but better if you know what i mean. Something that can be used for med/heavy spinning and some offshore work, bottom bouncing etc.. not considering the newer models, or an overhead! Budget around $300.

Looking forward to hearing your reply's Smile

What line do you run on it

Tue, 2008-11-11 13:26

What line do you run on it btw? If you're running braid and not too heavy, then you can get smaller and lighter reels than previously (i.e. some smaller reels can be quite strong, and with more than enough drag, so as long as you can fit enough line on then they're much nicer to use continuously)

Whats wrong with the newer

Whats wrong with the newer model 850ssm? I have a couple and they are pretty solid reels that I use for similar things that you do. I noticed that they were advertised as available (with rod) for $149, that is a bargain.

Nice one Uncle

Yeah running PE5 on a twinpower 8000pg, has become my favourite reel (most used) this year.

Might not have the capacity for heavy line loads though, I think I squeezed on about 280m on mine.

Saragosa vs Spheros

Tue, 2008-11-11 18:23

Is it much of a jump from the 8000-14000 sizes?? and is the Saragosa that much better than the Spheros??

850

Tue, 2008-11-11 18:33

I replaced my 850 with a 950. Bought one of the last ones available and it is fantastic. a bit heavy when using all day but well worth it when a marlin takes a little skirt out for tuna. Holds plenty of line and is built tuff. My next reel will probably be a Spheros as they are reasonably priced and do the business. My cousin has two of them and has given them a thrashing.

Big jump from 8000 to 14000

Wed, 2008-11-12 09:13

Big jump from 8000 to 14000 size.

Also have the choice of 18000 size Spheros or Saragosa, which is a bigger spool again on the 14000.

The Spheros will be fine for 30-50lb line, any heavier look at the Saragosa, or simply if you want to spend that bit extra.

If you do go the Spheros option remember to get the shop to put in a bearing to replace the bush on one side of the main gear. About an extra $25 fitted, but well worth it.

Fin-Nor Offshore

Wed, 2008-11-12 12:31

Fin-Nor Offshore 9500.........I was looking for an egg beater type reel which could fit more line than my Penn 9500ss, and I found it.
Fin Nor Offshore
4.41 gear ratio
Mono cap (yds/lbs)
400/25
375/30
Braid -600/100
I spooled them up with Platinum 30lbs which is 0.45mm and the whole 500m has fitted onto the reel. (Filled right to the top)

http://www.meltontackle.com/index.asp edit......This is where I bought mine but I just looked on their site and couldn't find them. Maybe look elsewhere on the net. They are a good reel.

ps I tried to insert a pic but couldn't get it to work.

I have 2 Spheros 12000 which is the same reel as the 14000 but with the shallower spool.  Still takes 300 plus meters 50lb braid if I am not mistaken.  Willing to part with them now that I have upgraded to the Stella.

One used, the other NIB.  You folks know what they go for, I am open to offers.
