Repower cost

Hi all, ive been in the market for a boat for a while now, mainly because im very fussy with what i want. But a common occurance ive had is motors with scary service history (mainly the etecs) but im wondering what it would cost for a re power. Looking for something 6m and ali so a 4st 150hp would be sufficient, not looking for a thirsty racer (got one in the garage already). I like the Suzuki's dunno much about yammys but saw a new merc at the ramp the other day and didnt realise it was running till the boat started moving which impressed me not really phased  by honda. Just looking for some info from you who have recently repowered cost of new and/or price you got trade in on the old. Just dont want to buy a problem motor then over capitalize too much on repowering. Cheers

Yamaha

Mate i got a new 150 Yamaha last year for my 19r. Same price as a 140hp Suzuki. Done 70hrs, uses just under 1ltr a nnm. In calm conditions i get better economy. Extremely quiet you dont even know it is running when on. i leave it on fishing all day, dont turn the thing off until back at the ramp. Very impressed with it. If i had to do it again i would have gone the 200hp. just gives more grunt with a following sea to stick on the back of a wave, but that is prop and boat set up come into play. I got 36kt out of it top speed to date, so should get 40kt i reckon right set up easy. Chivers Marine are the guys to see. Speak to Tim. Problem with Merc was parts and the time to get the motor. Also Merc is a new Generation of motor. The Yamaha has been around now for years so it is tried and tested. Show me a new merc that has done 5000hrs.... until then got to go with what has been proven IMO. Good luck let us know what you decide to go with.

I've got a Merc 150 and love it!

Bias alert!

 http://fishwrecked.com/forum/mercury-150hp-4stroke

The Merc 150 has been around for 8years now... Its pretty proven with plenty of stories on THT of +5000hrs. The 3ltr displacement is purring along for 150hp duty vs 2.3L for the equivalent Honda and 2.6L Yamaha.Maintenance is easy with no valve adjustments. Its probably the simplest 4stroke engine to self service and has been designed that way. Video attached. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghybfqpD2XQ

I've only done 250hrs in mine, Ranmar is at 450+ in his, not sure how Norun Nofun's brother is going?

Motor runs around $18k, fitted for $20.5 ish!

Nil problems, excellent motor. Not dissing 150 Yamahas at all, they have an excellent reputation--but I heard from a couple of different sources, including owners, advising me against fitting one to the Reefrunner when I was looking at options. Same thing as Houlty mentioned above, with the heavy hull , they felt like they were lacking at times in a following sea. 150 Merc performance more closely aligns to 175 Yamaha. I've had no such issues with the Merc--they are larger displacement, and produce their max HP at lower revs, with a good power spread. But you couldn't go wrong, reliabilty-wise, with either.

The only time I've ever wanted more hp from that motor  is running on glass calm , when you could comfortably sit on 30-knots plus.  So I have to be content with running at 27 knots @4500rpm when that happens.

I use nm/l

kilometres don't exist below the high tide mark , as far as i'm concerned.  But I'll help you out . Remember, this is pushing a hull which is just on 2 tonne in the water ( without bodies on board)

4500=27knots=0.8  nm/l = 1.48 km/l. (Upper crusing speed)

3800 (19-20 knots) =1nm/l = 1.852km/l(lower cruise speed)

3900-4200 (20-24 knots) 0.9= 1.67km/l (normal cruise speed)

And if you use km/hr for speed, 19knots 35km/hr, 24knots=44.5 km/hr, 27knots =50km/hr.

Certainly not as good as my old F115a Yamaha pushing the Swiftcraft, which only dropped under 2km/l in adverse conditions,  but the Reefrunner  would weigh about 850kg more. The 200hp V6 Merc would probably do better than the 150 for fuel if you wanted to go fast.

That is so old

Thu, 2020-02-06 07:56

Anyone who knows anything about modern outboards, at all, and is not relying on bowling club gossip for information knows that Mercury is now regarded as a class leader. The new range of motors started appearing in 2012 with the 150 4s we have been talking about, dropped the Optimax and added to it with the new v6 and v8 range in 2017/18, and they've built an excellent reputation. Any of the older motors, sure they won't help resale ( but hurt it less than having an etec on the back ) but the newer series are sought after.

Sure the new mercs maybe good motors but I can’t say they would be in the top two or three of the most sought after brands in the secondhand market

As I said above

Old Mercs are not the most sought after. The new range, right up there. So, yes, maybe the clueless would look at a boat with a new range Merc and go , no, not a Merc, they have just confirmed their cluelessness. If they can't tell the difference, they lack the basic cognitive skills to be in charge of a boat.   And this perception, if it actually exists, will fade away, anyway. F225 Yamaha corrosion issues, on the other hand, never will .

Cheers for the replies, was reading up on the new mercs and they seem to be a good bit of kit the simplicity is another plus, as for the yamaha debate they seem to be in a league of their own according to the second hand market, they are a great motor from the ones ive seen. Having only fished out of the yak i am very green when it comes to boats and motors so im just unsure on what avenue to take. As the thought of heading offshore with an unknown motor history kinda scares me regardless of make, and paying top dollar for a motor with 700+hrs isnt my idea of good value

My pair of 175 Verados have done almost 1200 hours ,still running like they're just out the box. There's a vid on YouTube of a Merc four stroke with 4500 hours on it . Look after em and they'll look after you !

Wed, 2020-02-05 21:24

You can get some good second hand ones out there. When we went looking it took a while but got a good 140 Johnson for 7k and 280 hours which I was told is th he same as the Suzie. Runs great and I get approx 50nm out of a 70 ltr tank cruising at about 25 knots. On an old swiftcraft that's quite heavy.
