Rising costs of imports
Having a bit of a surf around the net tonight and was surprised that one of Perths leading tackle stores has increased its prices on its Saltiga threadlines by about $260 for each model in the range.
Fair enough as the cost of imports are rising I suppose but what irit's me is the fact that when the dollar was around 70 c a few years ago these reels were selling at the original prices. The dollar then pushed up into the 90 c range for quite some time but the price never fell.
And yes, the old stock had to be cleared that was originally bought at 70c but surely they must have bought more stock when the dollar was higher and the reels subsequently cheaper.
To me that's profiteering, what do others think?

PS. Have bought gear from the store in question and will still continue to do so.

Price ratchet John. Quick to
Price ratchet John. Quick to rise, very slow to fall. Happens with petrol on a shorter timescale. As soon as it goes up elsewhere it goes up here pretty much straight away, but takes quite a while to drop. (bit different in the last few months though).
I know one store did mention that they would have to increase prices, so let people know in advance so you could take advantage of the lower prices.
Another thing to consider is that it isnt necessarily the tacklestores doings. E.g. their importer might change prices, so the tackle shop is still making a similar margin. I dont know if any tackle stores import their own gear though? The amount of middlemen and importers overcharging in this country is pretty bad. I know for some other things, prices can be double what they should be due to middlemen :(. In a lot of cases, the retailer isnt making any more than say a retailer in the US (and they US still has middlemen and shipping, etc, etc)

Big John
my late father always said cut the middle man out and everything would be a heck of a lot cheaper or just stop buying them for a couple of weeks and see what happens (don't know about your fishing gear & how long you can hang out) Nearly everything you buy know has the middle man, makes everything so expensive.

profiteering
Agreed Big john. good points....What about petrol? At under $1.00 a litre we will be taking at least 10 x 20 litre Jerry Cans to exmouth with us in January. I've already filled a few at 98c a litre.

The answer is shop around and even then shop around for a Stella if it is profiteering.

Cost prices have risen considerably

I've got dozens of letters from suppliers advising of price increases ranging from between 15% to 25%. Interesting to note that when the aussie dollar was in really good shape, I only received one notification from a supplier stating "due to the strong aussie dollar, we're pleased to announce a decrease in the price of the products we distribute".
As a retailer, when there's significant increases in cost prices on items like Saltiga's which don't offer huge margins anyway, there's no way we can absorb the whole increase in price. Crazy times at the moment...hopefully everything settles down sooner rather than later. And yeh, definately worth shopping around too, some of the prices around the place vary quite a bit.

just some prospective
I was buying Seven Sea's Hooker jigs for A$24 from a shop in Singapore (coz you couldnt get them here).....the tackle industry there is having its our financal melt down so have raised prices accordingly.....that combined with the devalue of the A$ dollar the same jigs are now worth A$46.00
I think a increase of 30% for imported jap products isnt unreasonable but take your point about prices never seem to come down.
That said I have 2 Saltiga boxes here.....both with the prices still on
First one brought sometime in 2006 $1160
the other is $980.00 brought in June.....
every thing is going to get more expensive.....watch imported boat prices

yep, when the AUD is high
yep, when the AUD is high they are very reluctant to reduce prices but when the dollar weakens it doesn't take long for prices to increase. Profiteering IMO.

The aud will rise, it all
The aud will rise, it all comes in cycles, i mean look at fuel and interest rates going down, the money saved on the car and the mortgage is a good thing especially to people who dont necessarily buy imports.
