River for Bream

Fished the Mosman Bay, Freshwater Bay areas for bream twice this week. Both times from about mid morning to early arvo and using coral prawns and bass minnows, atomic grubs, even gulp sandworms in camo and blood...

Cant seem to find fish.. I dont know what the hell im doing wrong... maybe im not patient enough but all that we kept landing was blowie after blowie and another blowie....

landed a leatherjacket this morning, (although that woulda been a fluke) and the other day, one undersized bream.....

Theres gotta be something im doing wrong... if one of you sly river fisho's can work it out, ill buy you a beer!

ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA WTF IS GOING ON?!?~!? Just cant find them!~

oh and keeping in mind both days, high tide was early morning and low tide was 4pm+ in the arvo

However, most peeps have said that tides dont matter much with bream in the river? Heh, I dunno!

Try around the back of the belmont race track! There is plenty of good snaggs for hardbodys and sp's and the side closest to the left from the hwy has some aswome flats for bait fishing. This spot has never not produced fish for me and every time i go there theres people walking the banks casting sp's for bream. You also pick up good sized flatties from there too. On the way home try the burswood area as well, the reeds go off at times. And keep an eye out for mullas smashing bait schools....THEY ARE THERE!

Keep it tight, reeeeeeel tight!

I dunno dude, I reckon you must be lying to me again ;) Do you berley up for bream? Or would berley in the river just bring the elite sas troop of blowies in?

ive never caught a bream on

Fri, 2007-07-27 17:28

ive never caught a bream on SP's before, however, i think my technique is fine... lots of twitches, pauses, jigs here and there, always casting near structure, pileons, rocks, snags.... Ive tried hard bodies too, techniques are fine there (im gathering) as the lures are swimming well and other fish (if you count blowies and smaller species) trail it...

Im thoroughly thinking that maybe im going the wrong time of the day in proximity to the tides or I just cant find the fish?! Im starting to find this too with going for tailor or other landbased sea fishing... I cant just seem to find them?!?!?!?

Maybe technique suggestions, to see, maybe i might be doing something wrong... or maybe, suggestions on how to choose a spot etc etc, but i guess thats straight forward, thats fishing, reading the water and sussing out fishy water as opposed to dead water heh...

I dont know whats wrong hey, im at a mega slump. I never had these issues when ive fished in the past, just recently, i cant get jack?!?

Dude I fish mornings later afternoons and night!

Fri, 2007-07-27 19:14

I had reports that fishing at night with baits around Burswood is been dynamite with bream to 35cm. I personally fish the early mornings like at 5.30am to about 7.30am before I head off to school and I've been landing some larger specimens. Some bloke came to Ranger Camping in Canning Vale and landed a Mulloway at the Cause Way when he saw them smashing baitfish on the surface and he caught it on a small halco twistie 15g! The Mulloway was released and at 103cm thats a damn good effort! Um at Maylands been firing especially at Garret Road Bridge, with Tranby house being a good work aswell! It does'nt hurt to move around like travel far upstream and work your way down untill you flush way to a nice spot which is producing.

Thats one damn long comment! =]

Cheers.. Jangles

dude cheers for that... so

Fri, 2007-07-27 20:11

dude cheers for that... so if you're hitting it early, you are fishing all around high tide... and for the guys going in the river in the evenings, that would be on the new tide coming in.... makes sense...

I been fishing stale tides.

Also, great effort mate, fishing before school at 5.30am thats bloody commited!

I'm working Burswood pretty hard! But I find that anywhere with open water with plenty of drains seem to fire well!

Just try it mate!

Fri, 2007-07-27 21:00

Its a long stretch and if the smaller fish are buggering you, keep moving up the bank! I worked that little boat ramp that they have when you go jet skiing. Thats another spot I work lures around on high tide, with the boat step up holding afew bream but plenty of chains are around! Look for drains and water inlets such as Claisebrook Inlet in East Perth. I landed plenty of bream on that side aswell, and if your bored using baits take a sandboard with ya and go down the massive hill there. But walk the banks and be a casting machine!

hmmm i dont know where that

Fri, 2007-07-27 21:11

hmmm i dont know where that baot ramp is, are you talking about the other side of the graham farmer fwy? where all the boats launch to go water skiing?

Doesnt matter, i think ill give burswood a try next time and if it doesnt fire, then ill try near the belmont racecourse....

how are you presenting your normal baits like prawns etc? long leader with a size 4-6 hook, leading up to a swivel then a small running sinker? or do you cast the prawns in unweighted?

Prawns with a smallest sinker you can get!

Fri, 2007-07-27 22:33

Using a small hook like a size 6 circle will be good and tie off with a swivel which you may put the smallest weight you can get! If not try letting it drift along just with the hook. Try using small prawn pieces like one centremeter pieces and unshelled. This is good on fussy fish including the large species.

rickets dont stress mate ,

rickets dont stress mate , bream at this time of year are really hard to catch, if i were you i would be hittign alot of structure with BAIT not lures, try sum bony herring or even mulies as bait, mix it up a bit. as for sinkers, light as possible (if you cant tie a double uni then the swivel is enough wait) dont shell your prawns, do you think fish eat there prey shelled? try  going at the canning bridge, on an out  going tide (that way your BAIT will get amonst the pilons) if that dusnt work wait till summer :D

cheers for the opinions

Sat, 2007-07-28 08:33

cheers for the opinions guys, I knew all that, i was just double checking that the information i knew is not wrong lol

As for the prawns, yeah thats an old age debate. I think the reason why people shell thier prawns, even though yes, they eat thier prawns with shells naturally, is because, bream tend to suck on the bait more to loosen the shell, before even swallowing the bait whereas, if it is shelled, they will suck it less and go for the swallow quicker, allowing you to set the hook with less chance of stuffing around...

Anyway, will hit the burswood and belmont section of the river next time I get a chance, also, as close to the new tide as possible, on high... and perhaps ill have a far better result :)

awesome man, im sitting behind the belmont racetrack right now, using my laptop and mobile phone for a modem...

only 2 boats out... gonna rig up and see if the snags prove worthy... only got sp's and gulps on me though so ill do my best without bait...

haha gotta love that... missus gets shitty at me and tells me to go out fishing so i get out of her hair, i cant argue with that!

Wrote a fairly big post

Sat, 2007-07-28 20:15

Wrote a fairly big post and the site's webserver crashed and lost my post grrrrrrr

Anyway now i have to cut a long story short... went fishing... before I even had a good chance, got snagged, whilst getting the snag off as per usual, rod flicked up unexpectedly and smacked into a tree branch snapping the tip off my raider :(

Now I only got my IM7 Graphite Team Daiwa Tierra to river bash with :(

Should be ok yeah? Its still quite light but not as light as the raider... raider was 6-10lbs and the tierra is 8-17lbs... taper is a bit thicker than the raider but it still quite light and flexi... should be ok for running 4lb fireline and 6lb fluro leader?

Hope so cos thats all i got now until i replace it probably in the next 10 years due to my missus having a crackdown on me buying fishing stuff :(

And the worst part of all.... DIDNT GET A CHANCE TO CATCH FISH! DAMMIT!
