Submitted by Snappie on Fri, 2011-05-20 09:53
Hi Guys, been a pretty dry start to the winter and have gone for a prawn a few times this year without almost any luck. I have been fishing from a jetty but not sure how the guys in the boats are going. any updates would be good but i haven't seen or heard of any good catches yet. hopefully things change when we finally get a few consecutive days of rain!!!!!!

What ever you do dont use a bright light as it make the praws dive deep.
I found the best light to use is a hand held spot light with a defussed work light type beam, they call them a tractor lamp beam. You can get the Hella spot lights for about 60 bucks from coventry's and the new beam insert at the same time I think they were about 20 bucks. Well worth the money.
I have been going prawning for some 20 years now and tried all sorts of lights and found this to be the best way.
My ol' man can hold the spotty in one hand scanning for prawns, a dab net in the other hand with a beer and still catch prawns at a full poles length standing on the bow of the boat!
The Dabbing poles are hard to find but easy to make and you can buy the nets from a fair few places. If you look hard enoung you may be able to find a mono net they heaps better than the old cotton and a shyte load lighter throgh the water.
Good luck let us know how you go next set of tides should be good with the last few days of rain.

Bright lights....
Yes agree not having a concentrated bright light. Best to go for a wide spread of light, so you can spot the prawns from a bit of distance and not at the last second.
We stock the dab nets. 72" drop net with 2pc 3m long pole.

Saturday Night Prawns
Went for a dab from the boat Saturday night. Got around 40 but had to work hard for them. Thought they would have been running a lot better.
For a cheap underwater lighting option - 12V Halogen's sealed with silicone in some PVC pipe. They seem to have just enough light so as not to spook them too far away, and they have a 60 degree beam for good wide coverage. Costs about $20 to setup.

Hey Guy's just wondering where abouts are you anchoring?
I always anchored to the side of the old channel closer to Lewin Launch ramp found this to be the best spot directly behind the channel marker and can swing the boat in and out of the channel.
Then you have the others guys on the rocky bay side channel does anyone go there?
I havent been for two years now since I sold my boat :(
