Rod Building

If anyone here is into rod building I'd like to ask a few questions.

Firstly, what are the benefits of building your own rod?

How difficult is it, how much time does it take?

Where can you buy the equipment, blanks, binding etc.. to build your own rod?

Is it cheaper than pre-made rods of the same calibre?

Thanks for any help.
Jay

$$$$

yep jay you do save some $$$ building it yourself. i'm in the process of building my second full rod and both of them will save me over half what i would have paid to buy the same blank off the shelf or custom built.

mudhole.com is the place to go, its got just about everything u want and the blanks are pretty cheap compared to what i've looked around for in perth and they are very fast.. it comes from florida and it'll arrive in about 5 working days if they have it in stock.

building will take you as long as you want.. the more effort you put into it the longer obviously but things like under binds and double overbind will take you more time.

my GT rod took me about a month of part time building (~20hrs) but i'm building a bream rod which i reckon i'll complete in 2 and abit weeks probably 6 hrs of actually working on it.\

there's plenty of great tutorials on the net on how to rod build, thats how i got started and you dont need any equipment, except it makes it much easier. look around and you'll find some good tips.. there's a rodbuilding 101 on mudhole.com which has a couple of good things.. also try rodbuilding.org

benefits of building it yourself is that you get to use a rod you built and put some love into!

beware.. its as addictive as buying tackle!

Custom Built Rods

Mon, 2006-08-28 06:40

Hi Jay,
I built custom made rods for couple tackle shops and numerous clients for about 10 yrs. The one thing I can tell you is if you are going to get into it, do it for your own personal satisfaction. You can easily buy rods now off the rack that are as good if not better than most custom made jobs. But the satisfaction of using and catching fish on a rod you have rolled yourself is great. It will generally cost you more money to build your own...but to do a quality job...it's the time that you need to weigh up. Lastly, if you decide to do it, try and find a good rod builder who will give you some hands on tips...aside from technical butt wraps...making the rod is not that hard, but hands on tuition from someone who has made the mistakes is very helpful.

My mums partner used to make a lot of rods in his spare time when he lived inland and couldn't go fishing. Now that he lives on the coast he finds less time to build rods but I'm sure he'll be able to give me a hand.
