Round OZ Kayakker Reaches Carnarvon

In excellent weather when one should have been out fishing we set out to give an early welcome to Freya, who is paddling her kayak around OZ.Not having radio contact and only a message to expect a phonecall when she was an hour out.

After a bit of driving round we spotted her about 2 miles north of the jetty and escorted her into the main boat harbour. The first thing on her mind was a nice hot shower.Sea Rescue president Gary Hornhardt and his wife Jill have offered her a place to stay while she is here.
Monday is a planned shopping day to stock up on supplies and depending on the forecast she hope to be away at sun up on Tuesday heading further down into the bay.

She was on her way at 0600 yesterday morning,we,Sea Rescue, escorted her out.
Got a phone call from her at 8 this morning to say thanks for the hospitality shown during her visit and to let us know that she had reached Cape Peron at 2100 last night. It was a paddle of some 37nm with a headwind most of the day.
She noticed a light and paddled for it and thankfully it was 2 blokes and 2 kids fishing on a sandspit. Not knowing who this person all clad in black and paddling a kayak in to shore in the middle of no where had them hold bits of wood like clubs until she explained to them what was happening. But all good and she's on her way again

LOL, that would be frightening a black figure dressed like a ninja coming out at you on the beach in a kayak,,37nm is good going the rest break would have her good.

Well done to Gary,Jill ,yourself and any others for the assistance recieved.

A kayak fisherman PMed me on another forum saying Terry Bolland(well known sea kayaker ) is going up some time to lend her a hand,,then Greg (her partner?) is taking over in Augusta

Her last kayak that was replaced after reef damage is at Terry Bollands shop Canoeing Downunder in Bassendean, its on display there if anybody interested in checking it out.

I will watch with interest how she goes getting past the 100 nm of cliffs shortly, good luck to her.

If you are fishing between Shark Bay and Kalbrri say G'day.

Good move. Nasty stretch of coast that. Would be wary doing it in a 20ft boat let alone a yak. Roughly 40nm from Steep point to the end of the cliffs which is in the vicinity of the Zuytdorp wreck is. Only another 40 odd nm to Kalbarri. At least you can get to shore if you really need to once your this side of the wreck. So long as there's no swellLaughing . Had to swim to shore 17nm north of the river mouth a month ago. Scary shit. Cooked motor and no swell. The perfect combination

Cheers Mick

Glad she has company, might be Terry Boland that will be with her, the cliffs have been one of the biggest concerns of the trip,,personally i would have thought the great Australian bight would be worse,, must be beaches you can land along there.

Enjoy your little swim Mick,lol

Scared the shit out of me Shorty. Luckily some of the boys I know were camping up there and pulled up on the "beach" to fish off the rocks. Got through it unscathed though. Wouldn't recommend it

a few questions, were you alone on the boat, how far did you swim ,did you just anchor up and swim, why not sit and wait, what time of day, did you get the boat back ok. I am seriously interested cheers Pete
