It depend on location and what outfit your using but a list of our favourites are;
Extreme and Halco metal slices in 40-50g (approx)
Sea Iron Super Sprat metals 45 & 60g
Richter Plugs in 2-3oz (colour doesnt matter)
Duel Adagio 125 Heavy stickbait
Zipbait Monsson Breaker 115 Stickbait
Ocean Potion 110mm stickbait
Rapala X-Rap SXR-14 minnow lure
These above lures are our favourites for landbase salmon (plus tailor) and boat wise we use similar products but lighter weight versions and Yo-Zuri Crystal minnows.
All us staff chase salmon every season so if any FW members are needing info on salmon lures or better area's to fish we're happy to help.
Whilst we caught them on halco twisties (20-40 g best for the light gear I use) and small richter plugs, and these certainly cast the best, I did best on light floating stickbaits, worked slowly in the shore wash.
I found that the salmon that were right in close (2-5 m from shore) were the ones hunting and hitting lures, and it was easier to hold a floating stickbait in this area for longer for the salmon to see it.
When the big schools were far out, I use a Sea Iron (basically a shiny snapper sinker....) for max distance. These worked OK but you had to cast in front of the school so they chased it down in hunt mode, else they would just cruise along laughing at your dodgy uni knot.
After a few fish caught they became flighty, I ended up using 15 lb flouro leader.
...every other man and his granny would be using blue smilin jacks...they don't cast particularly well, and the paint falls off very quickly, but they're cheap and catch fish.
If they're close enough, boat or shore, to get an unweighted placcie to, cast out and hang on!
I done well last year on lightly weighted 5in placcies popped into the school and bounced through, it seemed to work well when the salmon stopped hitting anything else, otherwise the smiling jacks are a goer.
All the above work, but my favourite slice atm is the Sprat. Comes with a single hook, makes them easier to get off and doesn't affect your catch rate. If anything, the single hook can increase it.
Xraps are good fun to use if they are in close enough, or off the rocks. The action of the lure is good to watch.
What an overwhelming response, the best I've had. Well I'm all set, I got smiling jacks, poppers and richter plugs. Now to hopefully catch a few. Thanks to everyone for their advice its much appreciated.
Save yourself some money and drill holes in old kitchen cutlery and add a split ring and treble/single hook haha. Spoon, knife or fork it didn't matter for us in Albany haha.
but when they aren't firing like that 40g+ twisty, 40g+ raider or Xrap SXR14 if they are close enough
Jackfrost, 5oz isnt too big for descent tailor or salmon but you will find going a little bit lighter will give you equal distance when you work the rod with a punchy cast.
I have a few lures that could work I think. Can I have a few opinions?
i have a halco roosts popper end and white about 13cm long I think.
i think a 4o richter plug in white
a 70g halco twisty gold
a couple FWA 20cm gold twisty and a 35g one I think.
is this a good collection? I think I will head up to Oceanside during the week with my mate to have a look at a few lures that are hopefully blue or something different to white or gold.

3 Ounce White Richter Plug
Not a better a lure out there for them. Casts like a bullet and can work it subsurface and on top.

I'm just a popper fisho for them, but if the opportunity arises, a live herring works nicely.

Lures
When they are close; small stickbaits or sp's (can mix the retrieval up if they're timid)
When they aren't close; kingfisher fat-r popper would back flat out
I stopped using metals as I've dropped too many of them on them over the years.

Yeah I would agree with all of the above, but if they are about and hungry, you could catch them on just about anything.

Had a Yo-zuri hydro popper
Had a Yo-zuri hydro popper that lasted three seasons and in all honestly probably 200+ fish. I think it's the toughest popper out in that size

Spanyid metal slices, they cast extremely far. Rapala X-rap, forgot which model, picked it up in the bargain bin at complete anglers.
TBH they will hit anything that they see.

With poppers, it's not so much the colour as the way you work it. Plenty of splashing and pushing out water is what attracts fish.

Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows and Shimano Waxwings
Cant beat em! That frantic action of the Waxwing REALLY gets them excited! Let it sink for a while then a quick retrieve. Thats how I got mine...
