Salmon lures - homemade

As the salmon, hit almost anything you throw at them in a frenzy, I  made this lure just as a bit of fun.

Anyone else made something similar.

Broomstick lures work well and cheap as chips. Buy a broomstick for a couple of bucks and some hooks and split rings. You will get 8 to 10 lures from a broomstick. Get some good single strand stainless wire. Bend it in half and put the 2 ends into a drill, put it on reverse thus putting a screw pattern into it. 5 minute araldite these into holes in the wood to suit to make your tow points for your split rings for the hooks and for your line at the front. Get a heap of different colour hobby paints from Bunnings and give them to your kids to paint. Have fun.

Garden hose

Sat, 2016-04-16 19:53

5 inches of green garden hose, free sliding up the trace with a big treble on the bottom.
Just cast it out and a quick wind in, works wonders

The neighbours might be a bit upset when they find a section missing out of their hose LOL

Well you wouldn't cut a section out of the middle of your own hose would you.

Nothing but a nice new shiny hook has managed to land one for me before (the chrome ones) ......when they are feeding ....ANYTHING that catches their eye will be taken before they even  think what they are doing !!

Spot on

Sun, 2016-04-17 06:42

Spot on Uncle, lures are not made to catch fish, they are designed to catch anglers as fish don't have the money or ability to purchase them.
Most times the cheapest and simplest lure will outfish the expensive ones. Many years back there was a group of us from Bunbury fishing Quobba for a week, we were using the Iron range of lures, the coffins and undertakers with exceptional results, another group were from a sports fishing company doing a field trip for a magazine and newspaper write up with some very well known anglers and they caught very little from the same locations in excellent conditions.
Reading their report a few weeks later they said how good their lures were but admitted that a group [ours] from Bunbury had good results but didn't mention what we were using.
Sadly one cannot buy the Iron rage any more because I would be right on to them

I recently went on a GT

Sun, 2016-04-17 11:23

I recently went on a GT popping trip. I put some old pine in my lathe and turned one to be about the 180gram range, went throughwire construction with 2mm stainless tie wire liberated from work. Then garnished it with 7/0 Gamakatsu GT recorders.  I managed to get 2 very large queenies on it, though, had to retire it afterwards, as they had considerably stretched the wire. I don't think it would have handled the big GT's too well.

Speaking of salmon lures, though, I took a smiling jacks lure with me, for in the shallow water. Brand new lure, first cast, hooked onto a 400mm wolf herring. I brought it to the side of the boat, and as I was trying to release it, it bit/snapped right through the lure, maybe 50 mm back from the front. Whilst they certainly do the damage on the salmon, they mightn't do a well against the vampiric teeth of a wolf herring.
