Question - why do fishermen call them 'salmon trout'?  not aimed at you Mat, coz its very common.  It seems a bit odd to me - I know it's because of the markings, but we don't have a different name for juveniles of many other species in such wide use, so why salmon?  I refuse to call them salmon trout, but guess my little protest won't change decades of habit Tongue out

hey fishnut.

I have heard that juvenile salmon and salmon trout are a different species.

aparrently juv salmon have gold dots

and salmon trout have darker brown dots.

I could be wrong but that is what I have heard.

cheers, Tom

I think it may be a name

commonly used in Victoria.  All the more reason to stick with salmon.  Having said that it's not a true salmon either.  In NZ they use the Maori name kahawai.

true - I suppose salmon is an abbreviation - the correct name is Western Australian Salmon, but that's just a mouthful!

Having said that

Mon, 2010-11-22 16:29

there are 2 sub-species, Eastern Australian Salmon/ Kahawai - Arripis trutta. Then the Western Australian Salmon - Arripis truttacea.

Other examples

Mon, 2010-11-22 12:45

could be 'Choppers' for small tailor or 'soapies' for small Mulloway.

I think it just stems from the huge number of localised names for different species in different regions like Mulloway/Jewfish/ River kingfish, Samsonfish/Kingie, Trickie snapper/blue lined Emperor, Garfish/Gardies etc.

I think the name Salmon trout has it's place. In their juvenile form >1kg they are quite different to when their adult. They also look quite similar to Herring, just a few small differences. Smaller eyes, dark blotch on pectoral fin, lack of dark blotches on tail fins. Each to their own mate but i'll keep calling them Salmon Trout.

Mon, 2010-11-22 16:40

yeah mate, I seem to remember seeing that too - but it's not correct.  There are three species of Australian Salmon

Eastern Australian Salmon (Victoria + Tas to Sth Qld, including in NZ where its called kahawai)

Western Australian Salmon (Victoria + Tas to Perth-ish)

Giant Kahawai (Pacific Islands, north of NZ)

then there is the Australian Herring (Victoria to around Shark Bay)

In tasmania they call salmon trout cocky salmon and the adults blackbacks. In vic they call tailor skippy. So its no wonder why people get confused. Everyone from different areas call things different.

that is why there is an official list to try and standardise it - at least for retail and scientific situations.  What the blokes at the jetty use will take a lot longer to standardise........

anyway, if anyone is interested in what each species is 'officially' and 'legally' called, it is all here (it's easiest to use the 'find' or 'search' function of your browser):
