Salting down mulies

Hi Everyone

hope you got into some over easter, i got a few up at s bend

I have heard you can salt down mulies to preserve them so they can just be kept in the fridge instead of a freezer.

i was wondering if anyone has done it and could give me any tips.

I obviously dont want them to go mushy, but it would mean i dont need to run a freezer when camping

also do the fish seem undeterred by the extra salt? or do they loose too much scent which would make them less effective as a bait?

what sort of salt..... rock or table?

cheers

Rig

I havent found fish deterred

I havent found fish deterred by the salt.

Ive seen a mate do it a few times, he does : 1. Get big tall 20l Bucket. 2. Fill with say 7cm of pool salt(from City Farmers) 3. Layer across defrosted/semi defrosted mulies so it almost covers the surface of the bucket. i.e about 8 mulies 4. add another layer , not quite as deep as first(just a few cm). and go back to step 3 again and repeat until bucket is full. 5. After a few days, change the salt and do it again as the salty gets all mushy. By replacing the salt with fresh stuff it helps preserve the mulies better. and voila, salted mulies.Keep a lid on the bucket. Note I havent actually done this, just seen a mate do it. The article in HB goes into more depth from memory.

Who used to empty out half a bag of pool salt and throw in a few broken up block of mulies in and wait until they dried out. It didn't seem to affect their catch rates.

Top Bait

Gday

I used to be a professional fisherman out of Canarvon , I only used mulies that had been in a salt brine for about 28 plus hours. The recipe I used  was , I had a plastic drum  approximately half the size of  44 gallon drum, used to fill to about a third full of sea water then mix in a 15+ kg bag of pool/butchers salt with a big paddle for 10 minutes then add 25 kg of IQF or top quality Mulies and leave for 28 hours. Take them out and I used an esky and layered them into  with a sprinkle of salt between layers. Best bait ever, looked like they had just come out of the water and they where like rubber!

Salted mulies.

I have frequently salted mulies left at the end of the day so that they could be used the next day.  I lay them out on newspaper and sprinkle them with cooking salt.  They still catch fish.

yeah sounds like you need a fair bit of salt but well worth it if it turns mulies into rubber
