sambo mayhem today
hi all ,just got home from an epic day on the water i took my brother , brother in law and two mates to the sambo aggs today , with the boys not being very experienced with big fish /jigging etc i supplied all the gear and spent time catching a tank full of livies (snook, herring, whiting)then blasted to rotto in perfect conditions , we fished the southern spots and fished the livies on circle hooks and every drop resulted in a sambo of 20 plus kilos some pushing 30 , we were soon surrounded by 10/15 boats jigging who were not having any success , while every short drift resulted in multiple hookups for my crew on the live bait (not too fashionable but very effective today)after 15 odd captures all bar 1 sambo released successfully with minimal damage and no sharking !!!! 1 hooked deeply and bled and on ice for the brother in law, pb's for all of my crew and smiles all round. on the last drop i let my brother in law (who is about 60 kilos wringing wet ) use my stella 20,000, anyway shortly after he touched bottom his live snook was taken by another solid sambo and i watched him for aminute getting his arms stretched then turned away to look at the gps and check our drift track when i heard a splash and some excited yelling i turned my head to see my crew leaning over the side pulling the brother in law back into my boat and my 20,000 stella combo no where to be seen (on its way to the bottom in 99.5 m of water with large sambo attatched (f@##ck!!!!!)he"d been pulled overboard !!!!! and lost my outfit!!!!!!after some minutes of deep sadness !!LOL AND A MINUTE OF SILENCE FOR THE LOSS OF AN OLD FRIEND (STELLA!) i decided to head to the northern aggs and see if the sharks were as bad as i have heard ,when we arrived at the northern spot we saw one boat with a bent but outfit hook and lose a shark so i dropped the head of the sambo we had in the icebox down on 80lb with a 5m cable trace and within a minute it was taken , after 1 hour or so of 5 person tag team fishing on a penn 950/37kg berkley dropshot outfit (with the drag locked and plenty of spool holding!!!) we got a whaler shark of massive proportions to the boat, i estimate it to have been 250kg or more and over 3metres it was a beast !! all 5 of us need to see a chiropractor after attempting something so stupid on the wrong type of outfit!!!!anyway this was enough for the day so we headed in on a glassy sea with a couple of jacks and cola and the stereo cranked up , it was an awesome day for all of us (other than my back issues from the shark!!!and lost stella outfit!!! CHEERS photo"s to follow

Look forward to the photos
Look forward to the photos mate! Such a shame about the stella, but thats what you get for letting a little bloke fish with the nice gear with heavy drag I'm guessing!
Wonder if someone will one day jig that outfit up... that'd be a score!

sounds like a fantastic day was had until your mate went for a swim with your rod in hand, maybe next time tie a rope onto the rod and save the rod and forget about the friend. would have liked to see the fight with the shark.

We saw the whole ordeal
We saw the whole ordeal Ryan. Almost in slow motion. I think the funniest part was when everyone on your boat went silent for a few minutes!
Bad luck, but it was well worth a laugh!

We were actually having a chuckle because Fong seemed to have his nose touch the water everytime he leaned over. His back must've taken a beating!
We didn't expect to see his two feet suddenly poke right out of the water! Gave it a minute of silence when we saw that he had 2 hands on the rail when he came up and 4 of you blokes were peering straight into the deep blue...

Sounds like a good day. I always wind the drag back a bit when letting a fishing novice use my gear. Rather see them loose a fish than my gear.

Don't worry mate, I learnt
Don't worry mate, I learnt the hard way a few years ago when a mate borrowed my Calcutter 400. Had the drag nearly at max because we where loosing a few spanglies to sharks. He managed to hook what we think was a golden trev (few around that day) and it wasn't too long before it was pulled out of his hands never to be seen again. The fact he had quite a few beers under his belt didn't help as well.

Top write up. Spewing about the stella but I'm sure you'll get the value of the reel via piss-pulling for the next twenty years or so.

if you have boat insurance this loss will be covered
so mabe you will get a new stella :)
getting the bottom line final answer from a bunch of blokes that use false names and put smiley faces at the end of paragraphs is not the best place in the world to get the information you seek.

thanks guys for your sincere condolances LOL!!!, we sure have an awesome fishery during the season ,but the sharks at the northern spots were unreal the only bait we put in the water was a 5kg head and it was swallowed before it was 40m down !!!!i see why most people struggle to fish there , but on a good note we went to 3 southern spots and all had fish and no sharks to be seen!!! it was one of those days as skipper that are all too rare , everything i said would happen to my inexperienced crew , happened within 5 minutes ,pb"s monster sharks , broken backs , fish will be too muc h for you pussies ,it all came to fruition !!!!!!!!!
