Sandy Cape Advice Needed

Still trying to find a mulloway. It looks like I won't be going as far north as first hoped so I am tossing up between going back to the area north of Leeman (which to be honest has never looked like producing a mulla - despite info to the contrary) - OR - heading up to Sandy Cape.

I've visited Sandy Cape a number of times, although only fished it once without success. There should be some nice gutters starting to form around now so figure it might be worth a stop for a night or two.

Can anyone give me any advice on whether I am better off targeting the sheltered area close to the main camp sites, or hitting up the more exposed areas to the south? I have a 4x4 so don't mind doing the hardwork to get to decent spots. Am I better targeting the gutters or looking for reef structure?

Going on a scaly mission soon - so will be using scalies, mulies, potentially blues and hopefully whiting as bait. Whiting being my first preference but it depends if they are around.

As far as rigs I try to use running sinker, 2x snell hooks...sometimes gangs...just depends on the bait and conditions.

I guess any tips, secrets, hotspots, etc on the area would really be appreciated. I've been chasing this mulla for going on two years now and don't seem to be able to move on and try and different types of fishing until I get it.......so it would be nice to nail it. Even if it's a 30cm schoolie! :-p

Cheers,

Buschy

Hi Buschy

we had a shack at Sandy cape for 20 years. I would go over to back beach ( just south of the headland) and find a good gutter close to shore. We caught a lot of tailor there over the years. We didnt really soak a bait for long periods like you do chasing Mullaway. Mainly just baitcast mulies, but there were likely looking gutters . Hope this helps. cheers Pete.

Sanctuary Area

Damn...just realised the area directly south is a Sanctuary Zone. Still plenty of good fishing to be had to the northern side hopefully. :-)

Cheers to all the advice. Sanctuary Zone makes life difficult unless I want to shirk the regulations....but I am a responsible fisherman....so will do the right thing. I may head a few K's further south and try the beaches half way between Jurien and Sandy Cape.

If I do get further north not sure if Wagoe is for me...if I had a crew with me different story...but I believe there is some excellent fishing to be had not too far from Wagoe (which was my original plan).

May end up just hitting the road and going bush bashing to check out some of the haunts along the coast...when I do that I find somewhere as jumps out and says 'fish me! ;)

hey Buschy, beaches south of lucky bay are holding a few mulloway at the moment. Plenty of soapies at Chinamens. Took my young bloke down to one of the jetties last week and caught countless juvenile golden trevs, little choppers, soapies. But have heard the beaches are fishing really well

Cheers Mick
