Saturday's Dhu

Hi All

Had a dive on Saturday with a mate and after heading out to a previously productive spot a bit deeper with not much to show for the bbq we headed in close to try for a few crays.

We headed into a bit of reef that we had not dived before in only 6 m of water and threw a few handfuls of burley around  that was left in the bucket then dropped over to try to save ourselve the embarasment of having sausages on the bbq that night. After picking up a couple of crays this big girl swims by. While I am not an advocate of taking too many big fish I have not seen a sized Dhuie in the water for some time most seem to be just sized or under so have left them. Anyway after a bit of stalking and a good shot the big girl was put to rest.  Weighed in at 14 kg it and after a good feed that night the rest was shared between some very happy friends and family.

Certainly a very niced sized

Mon, 2011-05-16 16:43

Certainly a very niced sized dhuie, especially for 6m of water. Were you free diving or scuba? 6m seems pretty shallow even by freedive standards (and not too deep to freedive crays) but then theres a tank there :p

Yes it was on scuba Hlokk I

Yes it was on scuba Hlokk I would have loved to get this one freediving as I do enjoy the challenge of that as well but as we were chasing crays and not the best of conditions being a bit of swell pushing through I had a tank on my back. I dont think it will be too long before spearfishing on Scuba will be banned here in WA as in other states.

A few areas it is. E.g. In Marion Marine Park, or some areas of rotto I think too? Pretty sure at ningaloo theres a lot of areas you cant spear on scuba? (More than freediving)

If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

 at least with spearing you

Mon, 2011-05-16 18:39

at least with spearing you dont drag undersized dhuies up out of 50m and "hope it survives"  .. and im not really a diver before anyone arcs up .. i just dont see why ppl hate it so much .. Great fish by the way :)

top dhu

top dhu on the straight hook bud - especially for 6m of water!

on tank possbily a little easier but i cant understand why ppl think spearing a fish is - cheating???? its not as easy as many assume..... to be able to freedive to depths of 10 , 15 20m and even deeper - firstly find the fish and then nail it are quiet challenging! and i love ferals comment on the draggin unwanted and undersize fish up and "hoping" they release.. totally agree bud ... outta sight outta mind?

Great fish mate, doesn't matter how ya caught it. I really don't understand why people feel comments like 'spearing = cheating' need to be put up?? Just makes people reluctant to post in the future. Fair enough if someone is doing the wrong thing then tell em what you think but otherwise I think comments like that should be kept to yourself. Keep up the good work.

Comment gone Dale, bit sick of that constant type of input from you that does nothing but create negative vibes.  Top dhu spicey.

Spearfishing on SCUBA is not

Tue, 2011-05-17 09:33

Spearfishing on SCUBA is not easy & not very productive as you can't cover as much ground. I can't see why it should be banned & I agree with ferals comment about dragging any fish up from depth. I don't think the odds of survival are that high. I know that if you pull them slowly & so on but still think not all of them survive.

Anyhow, top fish mate. I would be stoked with that one.

Thanks for all the support.

Thanks for all the support. I have been a fisherman all my life and diver most of it But after taking up spearfishing only in the last 10 years I have found I personally have more repsect for all marine life. Being able to study them underwater and only take it if you choose to and never take anything for granted. It is also a good feeling to see a big grouper or crayfish and leave it untouched in its enviroment. I have adopted the "take what you need not what you can" approach.

And no this fish was not taken anywhere near a marine park or sanctuary if anyone was thinking that may have been the case.
