Savge 435 Gannet vs Quintrex 420 Dory vs Other Models

Having a fair old time splitting the Savage and Quinnie apart... And havent written of the Stacer 429 Seahorse either (I looked at the Ally Craft, just wasnt conviced)

I already have a near new 40HP Yamaha Tiller Steer...  (I bought a year ago new)

Inshore work only in the right conditions (Inside Garden/Inside Naturaliste) and the odd river foray when I want a change...

Leaning towards the Savage, mainly as all reports have thier build as being the most solid...

Quite happy to get it as new hull/trailer combo, though I go a 2nd hand one if the price/condition was right...

Any thoughts/pointers ???

Stessco would have been my choice if buying new. Just seemed more solid than the others, that said I bought 2nd hand & found a bargain.

Savage is the one!

What about a polycraft 4.8 front runner, best of both worlds

For a boat to be seaworthy in calm conditions 4.8mtr seems to be the minimum lenght here in WA with the wave patern I have been told a few times.

Anyway, choosing & buying a boat is an exciting time.

Go the 420 Dory with the Millenium hull. I have had one for the last 6 months and it is amazing. By far the driest tinny I have been in and comfortably handles a 40 hp flat out. You will be impressed.

Savage

Sat, 2011-07-16 18:26

I've had a Savage Ranger 4.3m open dinghy for 21 yrs and it has served me well. I bought it as a shell and set it up to suit my personal needs, side mounted sounder, Gps and lights etc.

The little beauty has been to Exmouth about 6 times and to Gnaraloo 17 times and by the f#*K it has seen some blood. Put it in at Red Bluff and travelled all the way to the bay sounding and pinging and bleeding BUT if I was to get a similar size boat tomorrow  I would not hesitate in getting a 4.5 open Millenium Quinnee and the 40hp you have should do the job, I would opt for 50hp.

Easy to tow, easy to beach launch and you don't have it stuck out on the front lawn coz it's toooooo big.

Trim and tilt would be an advantage.

Stacer

Sat, 2011-07-23 19:59

I bought a Stacer Sea Horse a few years ago (new) and had heaps of dramas with the welds. In all fairness though, I was probably expecting a bit much out of it. Used to rip up to Bears from Canal Rocks and bang home diagonally against the breeze. The tray dropped out the first trip and then about two weeks later got caught out off the cape and the welds on a couple of the ribs went when I could've used a tough little boat. Whatever you buy mate, it should hoot along with the 40 as mine had a 30hp Merc and was good for 31knots.
