Your best bet is to take some sea sickness tablets when you are going out wide. Almost every person I take out wide gets sea sick.... thats after me telling them to take a tablet. General rule for my boat (excludes gf) is take a tablet or shut up untill we want to come home. Some people almost jump out of the boat and swim home, lol.

Start with Quells or Travacalm. These contain hyoscine so can make some people sleepy a few hours after taking them. There is also travacalm which has a bit of caffine added to it. If you are really having a problem with drowsiness try the natural ginger based ones.

Good luck, there is no worse a feeling that being sea sick and not being able to get back coz the fishings good!

Bones

Sun, 2009-12-27 21:17

Night before heading out I roll out my "magic carpet" and throw the bones over them while some grass is being burnt to fill the air with aroma. The way the moon falls on the bones while breathing in some aroma of the burnt grass fills the soul and protect agains all evil.

Works for me everytime done this a while ago heading out in the mornin.

I use travacalm original,

Mon, 2009-12-28 01:11

I also use travacalm original, which has worked for me so far (haven't tested it out on a really rough day).

It contains some old type antihistamine, hyoscine, and caffeine. The antihistamine is supposed to block input from you ears vestibular apparatus, the hyoscine is an anticholinergic which reduces secretions (why you get a dry mouth), and the caffeine is supposed to counter act the drowsiness that old antihistamines cause (newer non-drowsy antihistamines aren't effective antiemetics).

Frequency

Mon, 2009-12-28 01:37

Low frequency oscillation of around 4Hz or around four cycles per minute will get a lot of people sick - part of aviation physiology.

That should explain why you don't get sick on smaller boats in rough seas.

You probably have a more sensitive vestibular system.

Once the motion sickness starts it takes a while to go away.

Travelcalm

Mon, 2009-12-28 14:12

I too have suffered sea sickness.  Best results for me have been with TravelCalm, and a couple of No Doz for the drowsiness.  Repeat every 3-4 hours.

Its interesting that people say its in the head.  I tend to believe this.  I never get sick while the boat is underway, but will start spewing within minutes of it stopping.  When I went Scuba Diving I would have to be the first in the water, or look out!!!!  One dive off Rottnest I was spewing so hard I couldnt even get into my kit.  My mates threw all my gear into the water, then pushed me over.  I was still bobbing up and down at the same frequency as the boat, but after being in the water for a couple of minutes I was as right as rain.

from experience its not in

Mon, 2009-12-28 15:26

from experience its not in the head, but if you were thrown in the water and came good would have to tell you the same thing. i have been told by many people over the years that a dip in the ocean is a great cure for seasickness , my wife is a cronic sufferer but only when the boat stops even on a calm day. one day she swore black and blue she took her tablet and if it was in the head she should have been fine as she convinced herself she had taken the travacalm ,once we got home there was the tablet sitting on the bench

same here

Tue, 2009-12-29 04:15

spewed 7 times on one trip to the HMAS Brisbane!!! very embarrassing. but it feels sooooo good after throwing up - awesone wreck worth the spewing. and tons of BIG kingfish that you can reach out and touch.

never taken any tabs - which explains the spewing. A suit that's too tight (i put on weight) also makes it worse for me.

bobbing around in the water is different from being on the boat as the vestibular canals in your ears work on three axis - hence stay in front so you can see where you're going and in the middle of the boat.

sometimes i'll even feel queasy at the safety stop. wish someone came up with a definitive solution which is not a million dollar boat.

i hate sea sickness

Thu, 2009-12-31 10:20

i to suffer from sea sickness and i have to say its the worst feeling ever.

i have found that evan with a couple of tablets i still get sick.but the tablets do help a bit. as biggo said i dont get sick while the boat is underway while there is the breeze blowing in my face but as soon as we stop up it comes.

i also found that lime cordial helps, and so does a big brekky so you actually have something to bring up otherwise it hurts evan more.

a couple of weeks ago while diving it was real surgie and i got sick under water now thats an evan worse feeling.

i have found that the last few times i have taken seasick tablets that i feel sea sick straight away before i leave the house i guess its coz i know its gunna happen. so maybe it is mind over matter.

there should be a permanent fix for this a visit to the doc's or something.

cheers

Roddo
