Setting up an Aquarium

Hi guys.  Setting up an aquarium for fancy goldfish and looking for abit of advice.

The tank size is 120cm long, 50cm wide and 60cm deep.  I will have 3 canister filters running, all filled with bio balls and ceramic ring noodles.  One of the return hoses will go to the inbuilt filter compartment in the Aquarium hood. It will be filled with chemical filtration such as activated carbon etc.  I set it this way so that the chemical media can be added/removed without disturbing the biological filter media in the canisters.

Is there such a thing as too much filtration? Haha

Now, i am not sure whether to use sand or it leave the bottom bare. The tank sits on greenish blue foam so if I dont use substrate, the foam can be seen through the bottom of the tank, eliminating glare. Have read mixed opinions online regarding sand vs gravel vs bare bottom..

Thoughts?

Just don't put too many. Simple!

Why 3 canisters filters, why not one big one ? Not the biggest tank!

The filters are Aqua One 1200, 1050, and 700.  Two came with the tank, 1 was given to me.  So, decided to use all 3 filters! Haha

The tank won't be bare. It'll have bits of wood and also some plastic plants.

Planning to add around 6 fancy goldfish such as oranda etc

Ok, your tank is 360lt, filter turnover should be 1.5 tank volume min 2_2.5 is better. Carpet are big polluters and this will put a big strain on your bio filter, so better to be running 2 filters and only clean one at a time, ie 1 ever week. Do you understand the nitrogen cycle? Ammonia to nitrite to nitrate? If you want to under stand it better then pm your number. I have breed seahorses and run marine tanks for a long time

Thanks for the advice mate. So with 3 filters, my water turnover will be about 6-7 times per hour then!

Yes, I understand the nitrogen process.

Will pm you if I require additional assistance.

Gravel

I vote to go some gravel in the bottom. Looks good if you get the right colour. Also recommend, if you get gravel, to go for a naturally coloured one and not the artificial as i have an alge eater, to keep the placky plants clean, and he has eaten the colour off the gravel. Surprised he is still alive..lol

Im changing the tank to a Discus tank with some Sterbai cories. Also will have some dither fish, not sure whether to go Cardinals or Rummynose tetras.   Have added a very thin layer of sand for the cories to scavange through.  Will post up pics when done.
