Shark

Hi to all the FW users

I am new to the forum and new to the country, I live in Mandurah, can anybody offer me some advice of which beaches  I should try down this way to have a decent chance of hooking / catching a shark ? not bothered about size or types, would like to have a realistic chance of catching one.

Cheers in advance

Paul

Head down to any beach north or south of Mandurah. Look for a gutter or hole (darker coloured water) and send out ya bait. Kick back and wait.

Mandurah Sharks

Wed, 2013-01-23 21:13

Hi Paul

Plenty of smaller bronzies around the local beaches mainly up to 1.5m.  DON'T burley as this will bring Rays and bait stealing pickers.

Just buy some fresh  mullet (all the good local tackle stores have it) .

Whack a fillet on a set of ganged mustad  tarpon hooks (good strong hooks for sharks).  No need for wire trace if you are using a four gang (I picked up a 20ish kilo the other night on a 3 gang).  Maybe tape a cork float, or tie closed cell foam above the top hook for extra protection and lift to keep the bait away from crabs.

Change baits every 15 minutes to keep the smell going out.

Fish an open surf beach. If you are based in town, best head north to the Comet Bay stretch.

You will get your shark,  usually not long after dark (9pm),  or maybe later if there is a high tide.  Let them hook themsleves on a decent drag in a strongly anchored rod holder.

Cheers

Yes do burley

Thu, 2013-01-24 04:36

BURLEY and I Always use  wire if i want a shark. I favour small live baits ( Herring, Brean, Whiting) flicked out with enough lead to keep them out there.

Spots......seek and you shall find

Once again thanks for the information lads

NickS - I will head upto Comet bay for a first reccy and try a simple rig, what breaking strain line do you reccomend ?

I will progress into sliding baits and ballooning etc

I have loads of mullett at the back of my house (mandurah canals) maybe should by a throw / cast net over a few and use them for bait.

Thanks again lads - I think I will have a few wanders along the beaches on an evening see if anyone is fishing and get some idea of whats happening

Cheers

 Hi PaulI fish 30lb braid

Thu, 2013-01-24 18:46

 Hi Paul

I fish 30lb braid tied to 20m of 30lb mono for some stretch.  60lb leader.

I don't use wire,  as I feel mono increases the bycatch of mulloway and tailor.  I probably lose my hooks to a bite-off  one in every six or seven sharks. There normally aren't huge sharks along these beaches - unlike the ones in ChrisFish's posts.  Every now and then you will get a big one.

Having fished these beaches for many years, I can tell you there is no real need for burley if targeting a shark, and it can actually be detrimental in bringing in unwanted species. Good fresh, smelly, mullet changed at regular intervals, puts out enough smell for a cruising shark, which have some of the best smell receptors of all fish.

Burley is great in the right situation and location, but not in this case IMO.

Cheers

Never once used burley for sharks and i think between me and my mates where over 100 sharks in the last 12 months. Always get small ones on just fresh whole baits when I fished Perth. Burley just brings in rays. If your fishing the right spot it's just a waiting game for a passing shark to cruise past and smell it. This time of year from the right beaches I would get 1-5 runs a night on whole mullet or small tailor baits in metro areas just using 60lb wire, always used to get mulloway and tailor on the same rigs if they where around at the right spots. Bait presentation is the biggest factor I think with neat baits, wire sewn down so it's not flapping around ect.

Thanks Chris.

Actual experience suggests that burley isn't a key factor in targerting metro surf beach noahs.  Got three down Mandurah way tonight  without burley actually. All fought and landed by 7-10 year olds after initial hookup.

Tried to whack a quick pic up but it doesn't let me?  Says press ctrl  v and paste but doesn't work.

I dont know where in mandurah, but i will share what you can legally take.

1. grey nurse, white, speartooth or whale sharks are protected.
2. A maximum size of 700mm(70cm) between the two dorsal fins.
3. A maximum of 3 sharks per fisher.
