just been down south
well i spent the weekend down south with a mate to surf and hang with my son, my mate was juvious about surfing as like me we are older and dont do it anymore and with all the hype around white sharks he isnt at all interested ,
anyway i told him we are surfing supertubes and smiths reef area so we should be fine,
well we did surf saturday snext to smiths reef, massive swell, too big for me really but i give it a go,anyway i was out of the water watching after a few waves and the chopper came over, big 4.5m we were told in the channel between smiths reef and walls they came very low and blasted the alrams for everyone to get out,
a couple of young lads were shaken up after seeing the shark in the water through the wave,
anyway next day we went to margs that arvo , mate went out main break ( physco swell) later on up to gracetown where we could see the ski,s all the way out at cow bommie,
the chopper was over there , very low hovering , assuming the same again as 2 of the jetskis and surfers came in,
down south has definately changed the shark activity hype i witnessed with my own eyes, and it is out of control, so many people are afraid to go in at breaks ,
i worry about my son whom surfs every day, and i just heard that they have the chopper funded for another month only,

That beach break would have
That beach break would have been cranking, huge walls of water breaking into deep water so you can charge as hard as you like as long as you can hold your breath for ages. I used to be apprehensive about that long paddle through the Supertubes channel 20+ years ago let alone these days but I'm going to try and get the balls to surf Smith's again but breaks like Rocky Point, Other Side of the Moon and Windmills are definitely off the menu.

i hear ya mate
i know someone that was surfing rocky point the day the bodyboarder was taken a couple of years agao, and he and his mate had a seal pup leap out the water between them, moments later a huge shark had to be white went past them full throttle they were very lucky, not long after the bodyboarder was taken at boneyards, just around the other side of the rocks from rocky point, near the "hospital" which is renowned for salmon schooling up , and seals come there to feast also , the water is very cold in that corner ,

Farrrk that. Mate, I've told
Farrrk that. Mate, I've told this story here before but if not for a snapped bodyboard leash I'd forgotten to replace and a ripoff surf shop in Dunsborough I'd have been in the Boneyards lineup that afternoon as I'd had Father's Day brekkie at Bunkers and I called a Father's Day surf after seeing the surf cranking.
Went fishing instead but had told the old man and brother I was heading to Boneyards and they spent all afternoon not knowing if it was me that was taken. Full sliding doors moment and I've been fishing rather than surfing ever since.

Photos and report sent in today @ Yallingup Beach. Taken at 11:30am. Water police/Fisheries have been notified.
"Today my 14 yr old son Ben a first time surfer had a lesson in Yallingup for his birthday present. We were worried about sharks and were told it was a lagoon and was safe. Please see photos of what water police has confirmed is a shark to the left of him"

Hmm I'm not so sure
I'm not so sure that it's a dorsal fin, but I can't say what else it could be. To me the sharp lines just make me have a doubt about it, in saying that though I would have got my kid out of the water all the same.
Better to error on the side of caution with all the reported shark activity down that way.

its a seal i was there
yeah i saw this all over facebook yesterday was frustrating me, but it does show the level of paranoia out there now,
this was and is a seal, we saw it a couple of times sunday, it came into the lagoon where we were swimming at one point, the seal is warming ,
it will probably hang around for up to a couple of weeks if it doesnt get eaten, ususally tired they do it to regulate their temps again, after a long journey etc,
a couple of years ago there was the excat same thing out the front of my house on quinns beach, i decided to jump in as i thought it was wrapped in fishing line or in distress, and i was watching it over a few days, its actually a funny story as i walked in the water but it drops off there so i went under and instantly i was swimming, i turned my head around and the seal was right there kinda growling at me, i saw its tonsils put it that way, haha , that bloody seal cost me an iphone as i put it in my ugg on the beach and a wave washed it ,
i did save the phone from actually going in the drink but as the water receeded i tripped and with phone in hand it went under the sand and the water came up past my arm, still funny story to this day,
anyway yep that is definately a seal in yalls lagoon, even though there are 1350 posts sayings its a great white, one place that posted it even deleted my comments saying it is a seal, as i think they want everyone to think its a shark, hence the media post you put up hezzy,
cheers fellas,
in sating all that i have a day off now and im going surfing up at yanchep, i hope ill be back lol

jeez ,dunno harro , that
jeez ,dunno harro , that second bottom pic blown up does not look seal like , dophin ?yes .
seal may well have been there in the lagoon , but looking at the pic , its hard to call it as a seal imo
but yes your right the heightned level of apprehension and paranoia is clear ,
however in saying that there are alot of peeps now who are re thinking the whole cull /tags , remove a few compared to a year or two ago
pretty sure this wont go away any time soon as its impact is now starting to tell on tourism etc
