Condolences to family and all involved. My son surfs at this exact spot FFS. Time of year and overcast make it perfect conditions for this kind of event sadly.
condolences to the family and friends. would be a horrific thing to have to go through.
. have surfed this spot so many times. have seen a few whales with calves in close last few trips out on the boat. wondering if this may be drawing the sharks in.
Just waiting for the knee jerk reaction where drum lines are deployed on every beach. More signage needs to be put on the beaches, we are entering the ocean therefore we're becoming part of the food chain. We've got signs at every beach, boat ramp and bit of water up here on Thursday Island reminding you that there are crocodiles and they are a danger to humans. They don't tell you not to enter the water, you enter the water at your own risk. Education is paramount.
check out hillarys, signs for all the things you can’t do, no dogs no bikes etc, signs about where to park, how to get to launching area, there’s a big new electric one on the road in, 20 Kay’s an hour pass the the fisheries nothing works
Also 13 months since that 5.3m white was hanging around the same area, perhaps the same shark, be interested to know if that shark triggered any beacons in the area
Only my option, You can’t tell me mistaken identity . It seems there taking the lot know days ( not just a bite).cant blame food supply sound full of pinks . Very sad for family and friends. No dought won’t be last this season . Condolences to family
If drum lines weren't deployed immediately then fisheries should explain what their mitigation plans are after another fatality getting beyond a joke peoples lives and how they live them are at stake fuck the sharks to many getting to big it's only going to keep happening.
No no no stricko... it's the sharks domain and we enter at our own risk and sharks lives are so important Wank wank wank. Fuck the sharks! Just wait until a young kid gets taken. Unfortunately that may have to happen for any real action
And once again a balls up by the media, reporting that it was a teenage boy taken initially. Whatever happened to fact checking.
Same as 7 news naming that fella for the abduction the other day, poor bugger had death threats and threats of tribal punishment, had absolutely nothing to do with it.
And then again tonight reporting that it was a Travis Barker concert where 11 people were killed where as it was a Travis Scott show. WTF!
Over the last 30 odd years there has been a huge build up of whales coming up to northern waters for the winter and their carcasses washing up on beaches plus the ones we don't see further out to sea, these surely are going to attract white pointers knowing that a more or less guaranteed food source is there for them at that time of the year.
Now that the whale migration is over for another year their attention turn to the also ever increasing seal population along the coast, another great food source to keep them here longer.
Sadly this bloke has been bitten and eaten in tragic circumstances and on an anniversary of another persons death from a shark bite. When Ken Cruise was taken we we half way through a fishing trip off Hedland and had on board Rory McAuley from Fisheries shark research, his comments were that his phone was going to melt when we came back into range with all the media wanting answers and no doubt this is what would have been happening yesterday
Very sad news. I noticed on the SLSWA Twitter that whites have been pinging metro receivers lately. This has become a dangerous time of year for ocean users.
I started scuba diving in 1968 before that spearfishing mask snorkle in those early years sharks werea thought, but never so fformost in thie mind as they now are,if encounterd it was a bronzi or hammer up north Tigers plus. Whites thought of as uncommone more so down south albany. then the government thought it a great idea to buyback the fishing license of wet line & net fishers the outcome was our local fish & chipy shops who once sold great tasting fresh fishShark (Flake ) or gummy but a great feed at a very reasonabble price I do not know how many people gained a living from those two industires but it must have been a few,Why not allow the reintroduction of this employment opertunaty that would also allow good quaility fish localy sourced to the Australian people Still, probably not enought votes in those who may work in that industry.II had gone for over 50 years with never sighting a GWhite until off Scarborough when with a mate talking about a dive in 24mts my first GW circeld the boat 5 times that was about 10 years ago, since then I have now seen 4 others .
They're pretty telling numbers IMO. What did you do on those occasions you saw a GW? Go elsewhere, wait or abandon diving for the day? There's no way I'd be getting in the water!
Was on the rescue boat in Carnarvon doing the body recovery after the boat versus a 90 metre barge collision year back, the helicopter reported that there was 3 or 4 very large tigers circling the sunken boat but the police divers went in with complete trust in their shark shields. It took probable an hour to recover the 3 bodies from inside the cabin and the sharks kept their distance the whole time. There is no way I would have gone in shark shield or not. The divers deserve a medal if you ask me.
I havn't heard many reports of divers/ocean goers being attacked whilst wearing/using a shark shield. I've tested one at the Abrolhos Islands many years ago in Bronzie infested waters, I'm still alive. Would be interesting to see if they can stop a Big White travelling @ 10knots that's determined to eat you. Something I don't want to test with my brand new shield
Read on a now defunct dive forum about a diver and his wife checking their scuba gear in 15m off Meelup prior to cray season a few years back. Guy turns to see a GW staring down his wife from a few metres. He swims over and the shark disappears in poor visability. He's helping her onto the boat and the shark is coming at him in full attack mode. A few metres off and it stopped dead and shook it's head like a person walking into cobwebs. He was wearing shark shield and she wasn't. So maybe they'll stop a GW ............ sometimes!
If that was me the dive gear would be on Gumtree that day!
what was the name of the boat that was collected by the barge , i was in onslow when the harmony and pamila went i knew a few of the crew on both boats ,best keep my opinin to my self about how the ashberton shire conducted them self at the time , hope i am not a johna but was in carnarvon when the saint madilina capsized , bloke liveing with me in dampier was the boss of stoltt offshore he did the body recoverys worst job he ever did he told me WA police divers wouldnt do it
The barge had been brought down from north to shelter from a cyclone, they anchored it about 3nm offshore from Carnarvon, directly in line with the gap between Dorre and Bernier islands, being 90 metres long and approx 15 metres high, rust coloured and the tug was no where close to it.
The fibreglass cabin cruiser had 4pob, all members of sea rescue, left the ramp at 6 00 and being still dark ran slap bang in the middle of the barge, killing all on board. The coroners inquest found that the cops had made a mistake by letting the tug crew back on the barge before searching for themselves if the anchor navigation lights were working. Some witnesses said they saw no lights, other said yes?
The boat wasn't missed until one body was found that afternoon and the wreck spotted on the bottom under the barge. Water police divers arrived early next morning and we recovered the bodies and the wreck was towed to NW Seafood wharf and pulled from the water.
Carnarvinite , my mate , recovered the bodys of the pamila , harmony and the saint madilina , after the madilina when he got home to my home in dampier he was never the same bloke , Todd was a tiny jockey sized bloke ex Nz Navy clearance diver that could swim like a seal thats why he got all the nasty jobs , made a mottza of money the day he swam a rope under a bulk ore carier hull that ran aground in the shipping channel in Dampier on his back and had a 45 minutes at high tide to do it so they could drag some chains to the tugs
Yes mate the best course of action that day was to leave the area,I did notify the police/fisheries about it but who knows what they did.i know the block who was buzzed by a white at Burns Rock two years ago he was very very lucky.
A friend of one of my mates lives in mindarie and was out pulling his pots two days after the attack. A 3.5 meter Tiger was going around his boat before a big white came up underneath him. estimated 4.5 meter and probably the one that did the attack. he notified the authorities but i have not heard if any action was taken. Shit way to go.
Last week a mate at work saw his mate's phone video of a whaler and a very large white following up a pot 1 mile off Mindarie. And he told me this on Friday before the attack.
,Ol mate of mine is a Abalone diver in South Oz, he's also a champion spearfisherman and well known around the world for his record breaking captures. Greg. He has had his head inside a Great White's mouth and lived to tell the tail. He fears WP's on a daily basis and told me that the biggest White he has ever encountered was 20mtrs off the Mindarie breakwall. I'ved dived a bit with him and find he doesn't have much fear of sharks, unlike me. He's been attacked 3 times in WA by Bronze Whaler x 2, Great White x 1. LEGEND.
Greg and I was spearing off Red Bluff WA one day, I was actually just filming him spearing stuff for my new movie. My camera battery run flat so I went back to boat to get a new one. Nek minnet.... HELP....HELP, I could barely here him. He was like a mile away. I raced over in his boat and he's holding a decent sized Spaniard above his head whilst being circled by at least 5 Bronzies. FUCK... He throws the Mackie in the boat and swims away breathing up for another dive.
I was reading to-days West australian a former fisheries officer with about 20 years service said in his time both close to & offshore never saw any GW's He also said the the Elected public servants had a report from some Expert in California that the White population had dropped so his opinion was that they must have been in danger, our government like all elected A suckers then decleard the Great White endangerd ( I must say the former fisheries person did not refere to our government taxpayer funded emplyess in the way I discribe them ) But I have spearfished from the Montess to Augusta (Yanchep also gave me the cold sweats) Rottnest a particular favorite I started on tanks in 1968 same dive areas but also the English channel ,Off the Hiwaien coast Mederteranium,(strangly enough in 1976 a GW was reported while I was in Spain diving) Coral Bay down to Augusta untill 10 or so years ago sharks did not feture in my mind that much but now I deffinatly have them front & center,He also says about commercial fishing for them & what a great adition to our fresh fish As bnfor Shark shields think of this ,A boxer ,,takes some good belts to the nose during his career i know that when I have been hit there my eyes waterd and it hurt but boxers grow somewhat unafected by a hit on the snout I think a Great white will been much the same.
as with all shark attacks , there will be a big splash in the media then it will fade away , like the ripples of the attack well over due the big noahs were culled out untill you have had 1 go you you dont understand , and yes tiger sharks will take a person proven fact , nasty bloddy things smart , i have personal expiericene with 1 that followed our boat from bowers ledge to black ledge of onslow , and yes knew it was the same shark as i had put a a spear gun shaft between its eyes about 2 hours earlier that bounced of but was carring the mark from spear gun
since i havend posted on here for two years cant believe there there are so any haters take it easy boys and girls just coments nothing racial or derogertory just my personal opinions and yes i do fish i was out yeterday squiding in the sound only got 2 squid but bright yellow jigs were what we got them on
How many yarns you had about your ex surf filming career or mates of mates of mates shooting huge mackies aye cobba? Pete's had some pretty bloody memorable fodder on this site I reckon
But an experienced dive if in trouble will drope hie weight belt (Can be retrieved later or another time) this then allows the bouancy of the wet suit ,even steamers to help keep you on the surfave but at the worst side a body will generaly float after 3
too 4 days due to the gases so even if trapped in a hole ?

Shark Numbers
Over the last 30 odd years there has been a huge build up of whales coming up to northern waters for the winter and their carcasses washing up on beaches plus the ones we don't see further out to sea, these surely are going to attract white pointers knowing that a more or less guaranteed food source is there for them at that time of the year.

as with all shark attacks , there will be a big splash in the media then it will fade away , like the ripples of the attack well over due the big noahs were culled out untill you have had 1 go you you dont understand , and yes tiger sharks will take a person proven fact , nasty bloddy things smart , i have personal expiericene with 1 that followed our boat from bowers ledge to black ledge of onslow , and yes knew it was the same shark as i had put a a spear gun shaft between its eyes about 2 hours earlier that bounced of but was carring the mark from spear gun

I hope I am Wrong
But an experienced dive if in trouble will drope hie weight belt (Can be retrieved later or another time) this then allows the bouancy of the wet suit ,even steamers to help keep you on the surfave but at the worst side a body will generaly float after 3
too 4 days due to the gases so even if trapped in a hole ?
