Good move

Good move banning them. Every skipper should know there are hefty fines for dumping any form of plastic at sea, reckon you'd be hard pressed to find a strech of beach north of perth without those things washed up.

Hi Ya,

You're right, every skipper should know.  But I was disgusted a year or so ago when a commercial fishing boat was moving out of the harbour through the North Mole (that area where the Rottenest Ferry goes in to pick up passengers) and as it did so a crew member walked to the side of the boat and tossed a large piece of plastic into the water.  Won't name the boat but it had a name very similar if not the same as a well known soccer player

Pretty sad picture I might add.

Cheers.

And the tons od flotsam and jetsom Reefmonkey. Looks like a lot of the crap is dumped from merchant ships. Cooking oil cans ,crates etc. At least the ocean throws most of it back at us.

Seen plenty of worse countries but it has been a while, this is just a reminder of how bad it really is, elsewhere.

local boats I have deckied on

15 years ago (crays etc), every one had a policy of CUT the bait bands before bagging them, as its possible on a crappy day for stuff to get washed over.

So the culture in the cray industry has always been strong on the bait band thing. But there is always some idiot.

10 years back while tuna longlining we caught a blue shark with bait band I photographed it and returned the band to AFMA, who were certain it was from a jap longliner.

Probably seen a dozen or so with bands on over the years, on a turtle also over head and flipper.
