Shark - What kind?
Submitted by Goodz on Sun, 2012-01-22 16:44
Heres a few screen grabs from a dodgy underwater video of the shark I spent 45mins taming on PE6 jig gear on Sat. Just wondering what type of shark it is, obviously some sort of whaler? Estimate it was 3m+ when boatside, hard to tell from the pics. That's my rod tip in the pics too incase anyone was wondering... poor monster mesh couldn't handle it!

It was actually more of a bronze/grey colour when it came to the surface though it doesn't look like it in the photos. Blues are quite blue aren't they?

Silky Shark
Looks like a Silky shark imo. Definately not a blue. The eye is a giveaway. Blue eyes are large and completely black/ dark blue plus its head resembles a whaler.

Silky
My semi educated guess has it being a silky shark. The pecs are not long enough for an oceanic blue but long and slender like off a silky.

iam on with jungle jigger
$20 on the nose, $0 for a place, and Goodz how long did it take you to get to the boat? Blues are logs with fins and 9 times out of 10 will play dead all the way to the boat especially on heavy gear. Oh yeh congrats!!

Black whaler???
Strange that none of my books mentions a black whaler, including "The Field Identification Guide to West Australian Sharks and Shark like Rays"by R McAuley, D Newbound and R Ashworth of Dept of Fisheries WA,, Marine Fishes of Tropical Australi and South East Asia by Gerry Allen and Sea Fishes of Southern Australia by Barry Hutchins and Roger Swainston.

Apparently what they call
Apparently what they call Dusky Shark over in the Eastern States

I would agree that this Shark closely resembles the illustration in this book for a Dusky Shark/Black Whaler.
Definitly not a Blue Shark though. Have dived with Blues before out near the Rowleys and they are HEAPS bluer, a massivly long pectoral fin and more pointy looking, aswell as having the black eyes like a Mako.
And yes i have seen and dived with plenty of Blue Sharks up around the 2-2.5m size so they can get quiet big, apparently up to 3.8m.

Nose?
this shark has a far more stunted nose compared to the blues.
also observe mouth shape and eye size.

Cheers guys, im thinking maybe a silky too but don't think it had the long free ends on the dorsals like it should?
It released itself after snapping the 130lb mono leader that was tied to the wire trace. Glad I didn't lose any braid :)

Caught in 65m on a Sargent baker under a float in our berley trail. After hookup he headed straight to the bottom and I could gain anything for a good 15mins I recon.

Definately not a bluey, dusky or silky. The bend on it's head and 3 small bottom fins don't match up...

card shark?
consulting the marine fishes of north western australia book by by g allen and r swainston , by the wa museum,it appears to be
a long nosed grey shark , numb 22 in the book.
also known as a smoothfanged shark or inkytailed shark, grows to 3 metres, geograph bay northwards
carcharhinus brevipinna, i believe off the top of my head , haha
anyway studied your pics and compared , so thats my best guess.
either way there a backbreaker and a taxman.

Makes sense. I'm pretty sure it's a Dusky and it is this time of the year they move into water that is a bit more shallow than usual for pupping (although yours was a male). The dorsal is too far forward to be a Silky.

Probably not silky
the round edges on the pectorals dont fit. But I have no clue.
